I wanted my laguna I 1.9 dti Alize checked out prior to the M.O.T. I took it to an independent garage first regarding am engine service but also rang a renault dealer to ask their price and to check a few things.

The independent could not even come close to matching the dealerships price, so I took it to them.

While it was there having a major engine service (£310), I was called by the service manager who informed me of the following:

(1) both rear wheel cylinders had gone and that they were leaking and needed replacing and this would account for braking power loss (which I have not noticed); having since done a emergency stop the day after and the car stopped almost too well

(2) the near side CV joint rubber had split, no grease in there, that it had dried out and may last 2 days/2 weeks (but wouldn't it knock first?); drove the car to a place where there were some very tight turns with no knocking whatsoever

(3) that the whole handbrake assy had corroded and needed replacing; surely if it was corroded wouldn't the handbrake be slipping

(4) that the sub frame was badly corroded and would need replacing (he asked me over the phone - has this car been used or "lived" by the sea for a long period)? i have had a look at it today, it seems a bit rusty, and possibly corroded in one small corner but the under engine plastic panel is intact

I bought the car in aug 2006, it have been by the sea prior to being owned by me - we live in folkestone, it had a full M.O.T with the car and had had a full service prior to me buying it.

I took the car in for this full engine service - but the car feels worse than before (no go, sluggish). I also asked to look at the suspension because it sounded like it was knocking at low speeds, on the flat, in a straight line (suspension is fine). I also asked them to look at the drivers side window that comes out of it rubber when going up (they said they had sorted it, but it looks the same). I have taken the car out today and it does seem to be sluggish - certainly not as good uphill as it was

They do seem to taking the P big time. I have never heard of a subframe corroding in 6 years. I know sea air can take it's toll - but in a few months?

When I picked up the car today - i asked about the anti corrosion warranty and they informed me that it does not run out until 2008, but as it was on the job sheet it was assumed that they had checked that and that the subframe is not included.

Any thoughts people?

Never heard of them but they sound dodgy, The sub frame should last the life of the car, points 1-3 could need doing.

By major service I assume the cam belt was renewed, sounds like they did not time it correctly or fix the window correctly, both of which you paid for.

No, cambelt was NOT replaced - just ait filter, oil filter, oil and all fluids drained off and replaced, engine flush done

Sorry

Sorry, I did not realise that I could not name and shame, however I would appreciate some more responses to my dilemma please.

I intend to take the car to an independent garage for a pre M.O.T. check to find out if the dealer is lying and trying to get money out of me for nothing.

Is this the norm by the dealers?

Things that said they had done have been done such as the window and the shockers on the rear, do seem soft although they say that they are within "tolerance".

I think that taking the car to a different garage is a wise move.:).Get their opinion and then go from there. It does sound like the garage in question is taking the mickey, some what......

Good luck and keep us up to date on developments.:)

No luck yet

I have taken my laguna to 3 independant garages and asked for an inspection to be done on the car and all of them, having been informed of what has gone on at renault have refused to inspect the car.

Quoting that they will not go to court for £40.

They have basically said either go back to renault and demand that they show you where the faults are (not something I really want to do) or get RAC or the AA to inspect it.

RAC want £205 and the AA more.

Any ideas people?

Don't shoot the messenger

Hi Futsy – what exactly is the issue here? Is it you don’t like the report (none of us like to hear bad news but we don’t shoot the messenger) or do you disagree with it. I have no doubt the 3 independents you went to do not wish to enter into a legal issue with either you or other garages (that’s what solicitors are for). I am fairly sure their public liability insurers would not be willing to get involved. Would you be prepared to do so under similar circumstances?
Without further inspection (ideally by an independent qualified engineer) I cannot see how this issue can be resolved. It may be the first garage’s report is correct. One other point regarding the corrosion is that the vehicle may have been involved in an accident or been subjected to flooding or used for beach driving prior to you owning it. If it’s rusted to the point of being unsafe all the inspections in the world won’t cure it. You also have to consider you asked for a pre-MOT check and rightly or wrongly they have given you their considered opinion. If they overlooked a safety aspect and there was a serious accident as a result I could make a good guess where you would be seeking redress. Is your gripe regarding the inaccuracy of the report or is it an issue of honesty. If you asked for advice from a solicitor or an Independent Advisory Organisation they would probably advise to take the matter up with the garage that created the report.
