My 1.9dCi Laguna II shredded the aux drive belt recently. I've removed it and there's no damage to the surrounding area and the timing belt is fine. However, the engine won't start. There is currently no aux belt fitted, but as far as I know, this shouldn't affect the start (battery charged etc). The engine catches at first but sounds like the starter keeps going. Any ideas? I'm thinking fuel or airflow sensors, but I have no diagnostic gear to check.

Nothing obvious, apart from the usual that you would expect with no aux belt. The pre-heater light comes on and then goes off as usual before the start sequence, but then comes on again after a few seconds with the engine turning. I don't know if this is unusual because the engine doesn't normally turn over for that long without starting. I can't find a fuse specifically for the fuel pump - is there one?

Have you checked the valve timing - the timing belt may have jumped a tooth or so.

No, I haven't checked it yet - sounds a bit beyond me. Plus, I've just paid for a new cambelt, so I hope it's not that. is it easy to check? I've noticed that when I try to start it, it doesn't catch, but if I prime the fuel with the hand pump next to the fuel filter, it does catch. Either way, it still doesn't start. The new aux belt is now on. I've checked all the ignition and fuel related electrical connectors, with no joy. All ideas gratefully received!

Further to my last, the RAC have just had a look. Initially, he diagnosed no/low fuel pressure, but then noted a cam sensor fault code. Rather than take it to a garage, I could try a new cam sensor. I'm assuming that if the sensor doesn't detect that engine is rotating, it won't allow the fuel rail to pressurise. Any thoughts?

It's now with a diesel specialist. It's not the camshaft or crankshaft sensor. They advise a wiring fault, but it will cost me £140 for an electrician to find it. Anyone know how I can sell it? Good condition, 1.9dCi Dynamique hatch, 51 plate, 90000 miles, MOT to October, new timing belt.

i would almost certain the camshaft pully keyway has broken , whilst the timing will look correct, the cam is in the wrong place, done a few of these for this exact symptom.
would be interested in buying it if you dont want to get it done ?

What does the word catch mean do you mean it actually fires up (starts) and runs for a few sec's
If this is the case then i would say the transfer pump
drive has sheared this transfer pump sits on the rear
of high pressure pump held on by a few torq screws
just remove to check Hth Regards Mickeybo
