The timing belt on my much loved 2007 Renault Megane Extreme hatchback broke last week, my mechanic thinks It has damaged the valves but is not certain, he says it might work with a new timing belt but if not it would mean an engine rebuild. I am devastated, as I have had my Megane since new, it’s been serviced every year and I have really looked after it. It’s only done 66,000 miles. MOT until March 2026. It drives beautifully and is in very good condition, I recently had new brake discs and a new air flow system. It is too good to be scrapped! If there is anyone who has the skills to fix the damage from the timing belt failure, it would be a wonderful car with plenty more years of life. I love my car, it’s never let me down. I changed the timing belt in 2013 at 30,000 miles as I was living in Greece and driving to Spain.
As that was only 36,000 miles ago I thought it was fine, I didn’t know it should be changed either every 1000,000 miles or ten years, whichever comes first. It should have been changed 2 years ago, so it’s not the fault of my Megane. I’d love to see it go to a new home, please get in touch if you know anyone who could restore it and save it from the scrapyard. Thank you.
