Hello, I have a 2002 Scenic. The manual gear is stuck in 4th. I can take it out of 4th but no other gears can be selected.

The clutch can be engaged and the car will start to move.

I am stuck on a hill so when I start to go forward there is smoke is coming from the gear box area.

I can't get a recovery and the garage I use can't get me booked in until Thursday (now Saturday).

What is the most likely cause.

most likely cause is knackered selector dogs in the gearbox.

Smoke is most likely the clutch burning, is there a stong smell at the same time?

Just checked the linkage, as I suspected the plastic bush which holds the rod in, but this is okay.

Looking from underneath with someone using the gearstick. The gear selector will not let you select anything other than 4th.

A local garage quoted £180 to get gear box out and £300 to have it repaired. Does this sound reasonable?

Turns out the cogs in the gear box are broken and I burned out the clutch plate when I tried to get the car moving.

Expensive mistake.
