Hi. For the past 6 weeks the steering has intermittently been suddenly heavy while driving. After Green flag, independent garage and Local Renault garage saying there is no fault, I've finally got the local Renault dealer to experience the problem. However no one seems to know what's causing it and have been advised they are "punting" on it being the computer in the steering column. Hence recommended changing this at a cost of £1650 with no promise of fixing problem. Help what do I do? Car is a 59 plate.:confused:

It may well be a faulty power steering unit. Has the alternator voltage output been checked to eliminate that possibility. A drop in voltage can cause the steering motor to cut out.

Also it may be posible to get a reconditioned replacement unit cheaper - try the BBA Reman site.

There was a recall on earlier megane 3's ( the only recall Ive seen listed) related to power steering failure.

Its listed as wires rubbing on the steering column and since the power steering is electric..can cause intermittent failures while driving.

Id make sure that if yours was affected the recall was notified and "done" and that it hasnt recurred.

Id find it hard to believe a renault dealer wouldnt know of this.and either said to you "We know of recall blah blah blah..but yours was done, wasnt affected..or wotever"

Like above since it was the only recall Ive seen listed..Id make pds its nothing to do with that "fault" before spending that kind of money.
If it is that..Id imagine a recall liable fault is forever and not just in guarantee period..Maybe Im being naive
