Hi there, I purchased my megane about a month ago now, ive have had no problems with it until i tried to start it 2day. The engine would cut out as soon as it was started unless i put my foot down to keep it on. Sometimes it will idle but very badly and very loudly, the whole car shakes and there is a funny smell from the exhaust, there is also very little power coming from the engine i had to floor it just to move it back into my parking space. none of the dash/clock lights come on either. What i found wierd was how i was using it 15minutes earlier to get home from work with no problem at all, any help on this would be appreciated since I'd like to know if it is a big ££ job or not since my pockets are not too deep at the moment!

Thanks alot L.Raison

Edit: forgot to include info about the car if it helps, it is a 98 megane coupe sport 1.6e

The smell from the exhaust is probably unburnt fuel entering the CAT - sounds like it not firing on all cylinders and could be the dreaded coil failure. Have a hunt through the forum for coils - it a pretty common on Renaults:)

Thanks for the quick reply, I had been reading through the forums and it does seem to be similar to what others have described, hopefully it is just that, thanks!

Check for burst or detached hoses too, esecially one of the little thin ones that connects just under the windscreen to a sensor. It went on my old megane and caused horrendous problems.

The garage replaced the coils for a total of £67, now thats sorted that problem. but now ive got water leaking into the ir reciever for the immobiliser, so that doesnt work when its wet, and i also still have the problem where you go to start it, and u get a small buzz noise, no starter no nothing. starting to wish i still had my 93 escort... lol

Hi Raison - glad you got the running sorted - coils as usual - the water leaking in is likely to be from the roof aerial or the sunroof - have a search through the forum and you should find many helpful posts relating to this on various models of Renaults. Does the car start OK and is the sound you hear coming from inside the car or under the bonnet.:)

Once the starter actually starts working it starts up as normal, it sounds like the noise is either under the dash or near the engine

intermittent, just had a browse around the forums and i have sourced it to a bad connection to the starter, this is very hard to get to tho so my guess is i will have to get the local garage to do it? unless i could could stick it on a ramp and get to it easier from underneath? Thx alot for all your help

I just started having the same problem yesterday but my problem is intermittent. Driving home from work along the mororway could only get up to about 45 mph. Cut out when I slowed down at traffic lights and had to really pump the accelerator to get the revs up to get it going again. At same time the oil indicator short up to as high as it would go and then once I got going again dropped back to normal. I got home and felt the bonnet to see if it had overheated but it was freezing cold. A bit later (having found my AA card) I decided to take it out for a spin, it worked perfectly fine. Later that evening I drove the car twice with no problems, then later still my husband drove it twice and the problem was really bad, it stank of some sort of burning under the bonnet, as well as petrol (I guess from the pumping of the accelerator). There's plenty of oil, none spilled in the engine compartment, today I drove it to a garage to book it in for Monday and they said they thought it could be electrical, but I had no problems either to or from the garage. Interestingly we did have a problem for a couple of days last week where there seemed to be a steamy smell coming from under the bonnet but checked all the hoses and everything seemed fine. Then the smell stopped.

I also found that the problem was intermittent, I posted here as soon as my problem arose, but i managed to take it to tesco fine(less than a mile, im lazy), but not on the way back, and to the garage fine(7miles). I was told by a post further up in this thread that that horrible smell is unburnt fuel entering the cat. Everything you have described was the same as what happened in my case so although i know little about cars i would have to suggest the ignition coils ^^.
