Discussion Starter #1
Hi all, strange one this, hopefully someone may know whats wrong. I have a 1998, 4 door Renault Megane 1.6 Classic, and in the last few weeks, only when its raining/wet, the engine wont start, It happens only when I have been out in car, popped into shop, then return to it not starting, but after a little push...it bump starts with no problem. Does anyone have any idea what the fault could be, I do know that the battery is in tip top condition, as it hold a good charge.

Thanks for any help in advance

i bet you have had problems unlocking the doors too! yes, the problem is the immobiliser sensor below the aerial.
remove the interior light by pushing it forward and ill bet you water falls out. this board is the immobiliser reciever and will fail if wet. best to seal the underside of the aerial with mastic before replacing this sensor. a new one from renault will cost around £140..... go to the scrap yard and get a decent second hand one for about £10, unplug old one and plug in new one. it will be sorted!

Check wires to starter motor, I had this problem with a megane coupe and was informed by the AA that it was a common fault.

The wire in question is the one that feeds the soleniod and because of the postioning of the starter it tends to corrode.

Either cleaning or replacing the spade connection will cure.

If you can bump start the car this is not an immobiliser problem .

In case you are unsure the starter is located at the back of the engine, the wire you are looking for is the smaller of the two.

Starter problems

Had an intermitant starting problem on my Deisel Scenic. Sometimes starts fine, sometimes nothing, and had to bump start it. First time I got an exchange starter motor. £250 exchange and the devil to fit. 70,000 miles later it did the same again and this time I took the starter motor apart. The solenoid coil was loose inside the motor. Put it back with Loctite on the screws, and it started OK. Probably the same fault with the first one.

my old 99t megane done this - would turn over but not start til the engine had cooled. Turned out to be a common problem with the megane-crankshaft sensor

The TDC sensor is indeed a common, simple and relatively cheap to fix problem...

bearable common fault to live with though-only£18 for the part and easy to fit!!
In truth, these faults should have been sorted by renault
by now the model has been out for awhile. it's knowing what the problem is at the time.

I have a '96 megane coupe that leaked through the sunroof when it rained. bit tempermental to start until one day the immobiliser would not switch off at all. now starting it from a code provided by renault

has anyone tried and tested swapping the immobilser pcb over the light? do you need a new key as i am planning to go to the scrap yard shortly
