Would anyone know how to drill out the rivets that hold the number plate in place i.e. what size drill bit? I assume the drill bit would just have to be wider than the stem of the rivet??

Thanks to the two of you. Both replies make sense. I just wanted confirmation in case I f**ked up. ( Why break the habit of a lifetime:rolleyes:  )

If they're the plastic ones, just gouge them out with a screwdriver. That's what I did with mine, or at least the one remaining one. The other was destroyed when I tried to drive over a recycling container that the collectors had thoughtfully dumped right in front of my car where I woudln't see it.

If they're the metal ones, then go with what's already been said. You need to start with a bit that will happily sit in the dimple in the top of the rivet and then work your way up from there. Just don't apply any more force than is necessary to keep the bit in contact with the rivet.

Even an oversized bit shouldn't be a problem. You'll know when you've drilled far enough because the rivet head will start spinning round on the end of the bit. You'll be left with the body of the rivet sticking out, but you should be able to push that through.

No Plate removal

Is your plate metal or plastic. Most rivets are aluminium and quite soft. Use a slow turning drill and go carefully - don't force it - a good sharp drill also helps.

Did it already. Just in case anyone else is wondering, I used a drill bit just slightly narrower that the head of the rivet. Also, a little bit of force was needed( not much) to force the head of the rivet.:)
