Hi All ,

Car was in today for 54,000 service and mot (she is 5 yrs old next week) , Passed with flying colours and that including service came to £127 .50 (includes in that changing rear springs for progressive ones)... not bad i thought , while i was there i asked for quote for cambelt change .... £629 ... F***in' hell are these parts made fron platinum , even the garage was a bit embarrassed by the price.
Question i ask is car has done 54,000 miles and will be 5 years old next week ... and as the book says it should be changed 5 years or 72,000 miles whichever comes first ... how important is this 5 years .. reckon i can buy a little time to save some cash for this operation ?

Thanks all ... Chakota

I had an Astra some time ago, as I was having a new water pump fitted under warranty the garage asked me if I wanted a new cambelt fitted as it was due in a few thousand miles, it was due for changing every 40000 miles, at that time it would have cost £40 so I said yes.

I am pretty sure that they never fitted one but charged me as the new cambelt snapped 25000 miles later.

So I am sure you could be OK for a few miles yet but don't quote me, I had my cambelt changed on my Laguna dead on the recomended 5 years 2 months ago. £320 from Renaults on mine.

It is a lot more difficult to do on your V6.

Hi,

I would get it changed ASAP , If it goes you are talking about a huge bill, I would try an independent Renault Specialist as the cost saving could be quite considerable.

Yep - I agreee with both of the above as well.
If you don't get it done you will be faced with a much bigger repair bill.

As car is out of warranty you should be able to goto any reputable garage to do the work for you, preferably an Independant Renault specialist, seeing as the 3.0V6 Lag is a bit special.

Book time is over 4 hours,so a lot of the cost is made up of labour. Also, the belt and tensioners aren't cheap. The belt is about 8ft long,so your getting your moneys worth!:)
