Noticed recently that I'm starting to get a whine in 5th and 6th gears, more pronounced in 6th. Noise stops when off the gas, returns when back on it.

Anyone experienced this? How was it resolved? Bearings or full gearbox refurb?
Anyone know of a competent repairer in the Essex area?

Ta.

Anyone?????

Seems to be a common issue on these boxes?

Repair or full recondition required?
Ideally after repair only due to age and value of the car.....

Well resigned myself to a gearbox overhaul - £1030+vat!
Dependent on clutch and DMF condition, maybe those too at £220+vat and £550+vat respectively.

Bad days.....

Gearbox came back from repair - only needed bearings and seals however garage has confirmed that the DMF is shot so that will be getting replaced too

How much was the gearbox refurb?

What sort of mileage are the 'boxes giving before
they start grumbling?

Thanks.

Gearbox refurb was £530 and labour for removal / refitting was £500. Now also having a new DMF / clutch at an extra £550. (All plus the dreaded VAT of course!)

Mine has just hit 117000 miles, admittedly most of it's life has been distance work so 5th and 6th took most of the use.
It wasn't so much a grumble, more a light whine but was warned that once they start whining it's only a matter of time before things starts going wrong big-time and can end up trashing the casing

Thanks Stu, a lot of money but as the car has done
that mileag, shouldn't grumble, too much.
Hopefully with 55k miles on mine I have a bit of
time to start saving!
It is a lot of horses getting put through the gears
on these motors, especially if accelerating hard with
full loads.

Yep, will probably end up costing circa 2k but what else could I buy for that money? Only a timebomb!

I know the full history of the car as a friend had owned it from new, know how he drove it LOL!

Got my Espace back yesterday, £2175 lighter for the privilege!

Gearbox overhaul, new DMF, clutch and concentric slave. Drives lovely once again.

What did amaze me was the amount of wear on the DMF - I was always led to beleive that you could feel a worn DMF but on the Espace it appears not, there was something like an 1/8th of a turn or play in the DMF and also about 10mm of play forwards / backwards! It was truly knackered but still drove perfectly!

Only indication before / after was that when you started the car there was a slight rock in gear lever and a light knock similar to a worn gearbox mount. So if buying or have an Esapce that exhibits that, think DMF replacement!!!
