Ladies and Gents,

Does anyone out there use a rear cycle rack on a Mk IV Espace? If so what rack do you have?

I thought that the purpose made Renault rack looked like the right choice until my local dealer informed me that the rack (plus towbar electrics to enble a light board to be fitted) was £555!

The design looks good using the T-roof slots for stability and bolting to the tailgate either side of the number plate.

Surprisingly they had not sold a single one!

A second hand rack on ebay was bid up to £180 but that failed to meet the reserve price.

My other option is on the roof but I would like to keep that for my boats.

Cheers,
Paulus.

I've wanted one of these for a while. The original version for the Espace IV was recalled due to it causing damage to the rear door which is a composite rather than metal.

This has put me off buying one off Ebay - I've seen a few go for £200+

For the same reason I wouldn't use an aftermarket unit. I spoke to a couple of the main players and they don't do one for the Espace IV because the door isn't strong enough.

You could probably get away with just buying the rack from the main dealer which would cost appx £300, if you're careful with the placement of the bikes you may get away without needing the electrics - just stick a new numberplate on the back othe bikes.

The cheapest option is the roof but I thought it would be a pain trying to get them on and off 'cos the car's so high.

If I could get one of these for ~£150 I'd buy one but more than that is too much in my view.

Cheers and welcome to the forum.

ps If any Renault guys can get me a BIG discount on one of these, please PM me - I would really like one :)

Chris, I agree that the tow ball option is great if you have the tow ball already, but if you don't you;re a couple of hundred quid in before you start! The officail Renault tow bar carrier is pretty good value if I remember!

Does the same apply to the Scenic 11 year 05 ?

I use the towball route with a Thule Euro classic Pro903 carrier and a 4th bike adapter.

Its rock steady @ 85mph+ and easy to fit and folds for storage .... so on holiday we keep it in the back when its not being used.:)

I've noticed that the Renault rear door carrier has made a reappearance in the latest (2005) accessories catalogue/price list so I dont know if its a revised model or not.
Difficult to check given Renault reluctance to tell you anything about it products.

Hope it helps.

I use the thule three bike on tbar rack.

It locks on and has the built in number plate and
lights. It is solid at 130kmh, unless it has three bikes.
It fits any tbar ball.

With a spacer it allows for the door to open when you
have the bikes on just tilt the rack.

£90 in halfords.

In hindsight I should have just welded up my own one.

The wiring was £25 by a specialist. The tbar took ten
mins to fit, no drilling and very easy. £63 from towsure.

With your caravan, buy a rack to fit the alko chassis or off
the rear of the van.
