I have just bought a 2000 X Espace petrol auto with a gas conversion.
On driving it home on motorway all seemed fine and thought I had a bargain for under £500 untill after 3/4 miles it lost all drive.
I left it 2/3 hours and it drove another 2 miles before losin drive.
This morning restarted car after 10 hours and it drove about a mile but after cooling down later virtually has lost drive altogether.
Some say check your oil but how do you do that with no dipstick?
Would any other Renault auto gearbox fit?
thanks Tony

They are supposed to be filled for life so have no dipstick.

It is possible to refill these autoboxes with oil but really is a job best left for an expert or main dealer.

The car has to be plugged into diagnostic equipment and oil that overflows during filling as to be caught and measured so that the gearbox ECU can be updated. Well that's the way I understand it works from what I have read about it.

Thanks for your reply ,I have been told it was probably a sealed unit, but I was hoping for a cheap fix,but that seems very unlikely.:(
So been trawling ebay for auto box:cool:
The question is would a Laguna box be an alternative source?
Are all Espaces of the similar age the same gearbox ,or can they vary?
thanks for any advice Tony

mr espace is the resident Espace guru and is possibly the one best able to answer that question.

Well struggled with this piece of wonderfull piece of Gallic engineering and come to the conclusion it's scrap with an S.
1 Changes gearbox oil,had look of a muddy brown river-waste of time and money
2 Found car would drive for 50 yards then lose it's drive, take key out of ignition then it would drive again for a short distance and so on,if it's French electrical problems I think I will buy a box of matches to cure it!!!
any ideas please?

IIRC seem to remember reading some where? that there are solenoid valves on the auto boxes that can fail. It might be worth having a diagnostic scan done to see if there are any gear box related error codes?

Sorry don't know what else to suggest ? I personally think that the Renault DPO gearboxes are more trouble than their worth :(

Thanks for your input Recycled Scenic,
been googling and there is some evidence about gearbox solenoids?
I wonder If there is a fault with auto gearbox bands or clutches how is loss of drive temporally cured by removing ignition key?as quoted before solenoids, are they external and how much to replace?

Hi - think am having same problem with gearbox. Loss of drive and scraping noise. This has come after a recent bad run of gearbox "banging" (failing to respond and then 'banging' into gear) after being stuck in traffic on long journeys (i.e. anything over an hour moving around in London traffic).
I also found that car recovered a bit after a rest and so have been gingerly driving it about on 1 mile or less journeys (often in 1st or 2nd gear)
Did you get any further clarity on issue and can you help with any advice on likely cause or cost to repair?

I have a 1999 Espace automatic, when i gets hot after a few minutes a warning lights come on the dash (something like a heart monitor) and it gets stuck in gear....

Is there anyone who knows what this is or how to fix it

It goes into limp home mode. You should have it checked by specialist for gearbox related errors stored in the gearbox control unit. That light just notifies you there is a problem with a gearbox.
