Hi all, just bought a 2003 Clio 1.6 16v dynamique and am having a couple of issues. First of all when starting it can sometimes be a right pain because it stalls straightaway, other times it starts and revs over 1000 rpm then calms down to about 400rpm, others it starts and revs at about 200rpm, most of the time the latter. I really have to rev the ¤¤¤¤ off it to get it moving, it doesnt like crawling in 2nd, and it won't hold its revs, they go up, then fall straight back down again. I don't think I've ever come across a car that idles at 200rpm before!! Top end of the revs its fine, can easily get power to get upto 120mph etc, its just lower end its pants, and as soon as i take my foot off and dip the clutch to change gear all the electrics dim then pick up again, like its about to stall. Plus it's drinking petrol, (not because I'm crusing around at high speed all the time!) I got less than 300 miles out of a full tank of driving normally last week, and that was 98octane unleaded.

Well I took it back to the dealer today as it's under warranty and apparently they replaced the spark plugs because it had "non Renault approved plugs" and cleaned the throttle body housing. Seems to have done the trick (I hope!). Thank god it stalled the very moment the mechanic got near it, always pleasing when that happens so they can't tell you theres nowt wrong. Anyhow, MPG has gone up from 20ish to 39ish on the old puter jobby!

Hmm

Ok a week or so on and it's idling fine, but absolutely drinking the fuel, am using shell v-power so decent fuel but getting around 300miles out of an 11 gallon tank!! I had a ten year old Saxo VTR that had done 135k and it still used to do 38 miles to the gallon!!! Plus the fuel gauge in this Clio is useless, drops far too quickly then says it's empty when its got a good 3 or more gallon left. Any ideas? Not sure what the procedure is with dealer warranties as am now in Southampton and bought the car in Exeter, they told me there was a branch up here but there isn't! Don't want to take it to another Renault dealer and end up paying for it....

yea i also have a 1.6 16v and i have the same problem with the uneven idleing, when its cold it idle's higher, this is understandable, but once its warm the idle varies from 1000 to the bottom line on the tachometer, and also the mpg is down to 29.3 or thereabouts but when i bought the car it was on 35 ish from what i can remember, should i change the plugs to approved renault ones as i do know the car was serviced before i bought it.

It didn't really help much as I'm back down to getting less than 300 out of the tank.... Am waiting to head back to Devon so I can take it back to the dealer.

I had this kind of probelm (CLIO MK II phase II)

on my 2003 CLIO (1.4 16v engine MT )
I went to the garage and the diagnose computer (CLIP ?) found nothing .
so they replaced one of the ignition coils - it went fine for 2 months then the problem went back this time they replaced other coil (the one next to it ) it fine more or less since then how ever fuel consumption is not like before it used to be 33.9 MPG but now I get less then 28.25 ...

Hi tweety73,

Did you take you clio to a dealer to have the ignition coils replaced?
If so i'm surprised they replaced just one set because you should ALWAYS change BOTH together. Just replacing one will cause over-compensation in the other and certain failure within a short time.
Also just so that you're aware - the diagnostics computer doesn't always show up every fault, there are certain components (e.g. TDC sensor) that are not measured and will end costing you a trip to the dealer to be told they can't find anything!

Engine problems

I am having a nightmare with my clio at the moment i recently posted a message under immobiliser problems because i thought that was the problem with my car. I now find out that it isn't but renault can't do anything about it.

Basically i have these two warning lights that apear on my dash, one looks like a spring coil and the other a graph. But because the magic "renault diagnostic compuet" can't find a fault they are telling me nothing is wrong.

Sorry i am rambling... anyway when i start the car these two lights are on after about 10 minutes they go off the car runs great and then a foot up mthe road these two lights come back on again and it cuts out.

Has any one had these problems or warning lights and do they know what the problem might be because i am stumped and don't know where else to go.

Thanks

Brakelights - I have kind of the same trouble with the 1.2 16v cutting out etc. I've had it for a while now and I can tell you that a new TDC sensor and a new MAP sensor didn't help solve the problem. Once I have the funds I'll take it in, although before then I'll probably try cleaning out the throttle body or something like that. General easy maintenace jobs and such.
