Hi Stuart - the Clio 1 doesn't have springs on the rear it has torsion bars on each side and to lower the set of the rear suspension the suspension arms have to be moved on the splines - it can be quite tricky and many mechanics don't want to know cos the bolts and fittings have a nasty habit of breaking etc. If the car is ageing a bit the torsion bars become tired and lowering the suspension can increase the load factors to a point where the splines can fail. With torsion bar type suspension lowering won't improve handling and in most cases actually makes it much worse. Also it appears many insurers will not accept this type of modification as it involves changing the structural settings of original equipment. My advice is to check with your insurers first as you could end up with no cover in the event of an accident even if it is not your fault.
