Hello,

We have a 51 plate 1.2 Dynamique with 60k on the clock. It has done us proud but we now have a problem with it. I have read about all the problems with the exhaust emission light coming on. However, there is another problem which started at the same time as the warning light. On starting the engine a ticking sound can be heard from what seems like the area around the drivers side headlamp. This goes on for about 2 or 3 minutes after the car is turned off. I thought it was the fanbelt/fan or something but it definitely seems to be coming from the headlamp area. Anyone any ideas??

Thanks in advance!!

Sounds like the Purge valve on the Carbon canister which is part of the fuel vapour cicuit..

Yes and no to be honest.

I took it down to the local garage (not a Renault dealer). He plugged it in and cleared out all the warning flags.

I actually traded in the Clio a week later (ouch, but it was with a main dealer who never even wanted to see the car before he gave me a good trade in deal) so I can't report whether the "faults" returned or not.

Well, it is for my wifes daily commute. She wanted something a bit bigger than the Clio this time but she doesn't like the look of the Megane.

Nothing wrong with a skateboard.

Hi,

I have been having this same problem (but without the TOXIC light coming in)

Initially what happened is....the engine management light came on and the car was not idling properly, I called the RAC out and he said it was either the Throttle Body or the fuel circuit.

The RAC man cleared the code's and it seemed to run OK. I looked into the problem on here and found out about the Tamper-proof box for the ECU and saw that it was loose on my Clio and had worn away some of the wires.

I had a local garage take the steel box off and repair the wires, the light was still coming on and the codes said it was the MAP sensor that needed replacing.

Had this replaced and the problem is still going on (although not a frequent as before)

It also seems to happen when slowing down and braking, the engine management light would come on, and it would not idle correctly and sometimes stall. I can start the engine and drive off and the light would go off after about 20/30 seconds and all would be OK.

Last week, I took all of the relays out, cleaned and replaced them and it has not happened when braking now so (touch wood) I think I may have solved that one.

But going back to the original question in the thread.....Occasionally after starting the car it will splutter and I have to rev it up a little to get it going, Sometimes if I don't rev it the engine management light will come on and I can hear a Ticking/Clicking noise coming from the drivers side headlight, when the light goes off the noise stops.

Does anyone have any suggestions/solutions for this problem.?

(sorry for the long reply. I thought it would be better to get the story out in one go)

Thanks for any solutions/replies

Max

Got a funny noise from mine too, but whilst looking i noticed there is a vacuum pipe which runs from the inlet manifold to the drivers headlight??? possibly to the headlight adjuster, maybe you adjuster is sticking?

Hi,
Have a 51 plate Renault clio 1.2 16v with the same problem. The toxic warning lamp is on all the time and there is a clicking from the offside headlamp area which goes on for 30 seconds or more when the engine is switched off.
The clicking is the Evaporative purge valve which appears to want to operate all the time the engine is running. The haynes manual states the valve should ONLY operate when the engine is up to temperature and with the throttle above the idle setting. It would therefore appear to be a problem with the EMU.
I was wondering if the valve is operating all the time if the engine is being over fueled thus causing the toxic warning light to operate.
Any thoughts?
I am also looking for a recommendation for a software package that can interogate the EMU and return the DTC codes. There appears to be a number of products out there any help would be appreciated.

it's the purge solenoid for the evap cannister. Make sure it's not full of fuel or water, they are supposed to click but some get noisy with age, you need to plug in to confirm the fault code, no point guessing

Hi Again,

have pulled fault codes;

P0130 02 Sensor circuit malfunction (Bank1 Sensor 1)

P0136 as above (Bank1 Sensor2)

Have checked voltages at plug on sensor2 12v and 0v present for heater but no +5v present for reference signal for sensor. Checked plugs on to EMU seam ok and wiring harness.
Any other advice / guidance?

Regards

Have now sorted the P0136 DTC this was the 02 sensor.
The engine will now run for a while and go in to closed loop operation with the 02 sensor cycling properly. However, when it has heated up it will come out of closed loop operation and then just run in open loop (accelerating) with a 02 sensor voltage of about 0.7v.

The long term fuel trim is running at -18% and when the engine goes back in to open loop the short term fuel trim stays at 0% all the time.

Any advice would be welcome.

Further update. The problem with the purge valve came back, turned out to be the wiring harness close to the ECU plug (Brown plug) cables shorting together causing the purge valve to run all the time. It also caused the 02 sensor fault code to set again (P0130) as it forced the mixture lean, such that the 02 sensor stayed at 0.2v or less all the time. Thus the ECU thought the sensor was faulty.
