:) THE CAR:- 1999 ESPACE 2.0 16V ALIZE (PETROL).

:( THE PROBLEM:- HEATER FAN NOT WORKING

ALL THE BUTTONS ON THE DASH CONTROLLER WORK(A SOUND OF A MOTOR FOR EACH BUTTON PRESSED) AIR CON BUTTON WORKS (INCREASE IN ENGINE SPEED WHEN PRESSED). ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE CONTROLLER WORK.

THE FIX:- INTERIOR FUSE BOX = ALL O.K ( with all lights working on the control panel this was wishful thinking )

so i move on to the ENGINE BAY FUSE BOX LOOKING FOR THE RELAY.

FUSEBOX.jpg (143.1 KB)

got my son to turn the ignition to aux and i hear a click from the relay its working fine ( easy fixes running out )

NEXT STEP TO GET AT THE FAN ITSELF

I HAVE TO REMOVE THE TOP PART OF THE DASH ( SOUNDS HARD BUT WAS QUIET EASY - SIX SCREWS AND THREE CLIPS IT OFF ) SEE PICS
1. ON BOTH SIDES REMOVE THE SPEAKER COVER THEN THE 3 SCREWS HOLDING THE SPEAKER IN PLACE

1a. unclip the dash (3 push to fix clips above the display)

2. REMOVE THE 5 SCREWS HOLDING THE DIGITAL DISPLAY IN POSITION ( 3 FACING TOWARDS THE SEATS AND 2 FACING DOWNWARDS(PROBABLY UNDER THE LARGE PIECES OF RUBBER ON TOP OF THE DISPLAY MINE WAS)

3. REMOVE THE 2 LARGE PLASTIC SCREWS HODING THE SOUND PROOFING IN PLACE AND REMOVE IT.

4. REMOVE THE 8 SCREWS HOLDING THE HEATER COVER IN PLACE AND REMOVE( SEE PIC )

5. FOUND THR PLUG FOR THE HEATER TO THE RELAY(JUST TO THE LEFT OF THE MOUNTS FOR THE INSTRUMENT PANEL
( SEE PIC. ).I HAVE POWER AND EARTH SO THE WIRING FROM THE RELAY IS FINE.

6. I MOVE ON TO THE RISISTOR PACK ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HEATER MOTORS ( FIND NO POWER FROM THE HEATER CONTROL GETTING THROUGH TO THE RESISTORS A QUICK SPRAY WITH WD40 AND CHECK ( SEE PIC ) EVERYTHINGS FINE JUST POOR CONNECTION

7. CHECK FAN EVERYTHING WORKS ..REPACE EVERYTHING

Hi

Followed the above tutorial, very informative, exactly as worded followed it very easily. My problem is that everyting is fine except fan wont work could it be the motor is knackered? I find that a little strange as my RTX seems to have a twin motor can they both go at once. I`ve checked the relay, power supply, resistor and even power right up to both motors and there is power there as well? There seems to be power on both sides red and black wires that I dont think is right. Any ideas.

Thanks

hi yusuf gaz
did you have 12v and earth on the plug to the left of the display(see pic) if so try running a cable direct from there to the motors if they work check you have 8v 8v 12 on the 3 pin plug on the from the control to the resistor pack (see pic)

Hi

I`m going to run a cable direct 12 v supply to the motors to see if there is any life in them. Which 3 pin plug are you talking about as I havent managed to take the controller off, is it behind the controller? havent figured out how to take it off but all the lights on the controller are working and when pressed the relevent flaps operate. The resistor pack is the two plugs with the yellow color that has two wires each going in right? Then from there goes to the two motors right?

Thanks

don,t bother with the controller unit there is nothing you can fix in it(it`s all just small pcb boards ) the controller plug is the one nearest the windscreen on the resistor pack mine had 3 wires one of my pics shows me testing it also when i unpluged this the lights on the controller unit went out

Update -

Good news is that the motors are working, applied 12v directly to the motors. There is also 12v at the supply side of the resistor so either the resistor is knackered or there is something wrong at the plug with the 3 wires, so going to get a voltmeter and test voltages. When I take the plug off the lights at control switches goes off.

If resistor is knackered any ideas on cost as I rang renault and they quoted me £96 + vat, ouch.

If voltages at the 3 wires is wrong any suggestions.

Thanks

Hi

Another Update.

Been at it most of the day, had to choose a day when its pissing down and cold anyway I got a multitester and checked all the wiring and it seems fine.
Theres 12v and earth at the plug to the left of the display.
There is 12v and earth at the plug at the resistor pack. There is 12v 9v and 9v at both the 3 cable plug just left of the display and also at resistor end. Took the resistor apart reconnected plugs, ignition on but be careful if you earth the heatsink on the resistor which I did the motors kick in if working which mine are, just missed my fingers. This is where readings differ, still got 12v and earth on the pcb but on the 3 cables on the pcb I got 12v but no readings on the other 2.

All fixed +Thanks

Hi

Glad to say its all fixed. It was the resistor pack I managed to get one from a place in
:Specialist Renault Breakers, Accrington, information which was posted by a member on this site, really good service off the shelf, phoned up, went there, picked up and fixed wouldnt have found it without that info.
My main thanks to fixmycar whose info was spot on and I dont know how he took the photos but thanks without whose info and replies I wouldnt have been able to have done this.

Thanks

Hi Fixmycar!
Sorry to bother you!
I have a 1996 Espace RT 2.0 petrol Inj and a heater blower problem.
The fan works only on high setting, but does blow hot air and from what I've read on this site, it seems to point to a resistor. The problem is I have no idea where to find it!?
I understand your very informative tutorial, but i fear it won't work with my older model and from what I can figure out, what I'm looking for is under the bonnet and not behind the dash!
Any chance of a point in the right direction please?
