Hi, Was talking to renault tech who let slip how to reset the electronic parking brake on my grand scenic without going to dealer, this works if you have had to pull the yellow emergency handle in rear which i have had to do this week.

renault guy says providing there are no faults

turn your ignition on without starting engine, have drivers door openand press lock button on keycard
put keycard in reader and press start button for 5 seconds.
pull large part of manual handbrake handle and push small button with red light without letting go of larger handle and you should hear the handbrake motor reset some time you will have to do

let me know if this works it did with mine even though on my dash it is saying parking brake fault, i had to do it with my car in first as there is a fault wih my parking break but it still seems to reset.

Re: Reset electronic handbrake,LOOK HEAR

Hi,
The process you described does work I think!
I tried it thinking it might reset the handbrake fault message.
It didn't but it did bring up the message 'park brake on'.
Its strange because I used the yellow lever a few times when I first got my car because I thought it was applying while driving.
I never had to reset it, it always applied when I pulled the lever...

I read this post last night and thought, thats handy to know. Guess what? tonight I got 'parking break fault' on my dash. Did this process 3 times, each time pulling the yellow handle again to release the break. I nearly gave up but on the 4th attempt it sorted itself out. Not sure if it was because I put the parking break on and off a few times before turning off the ignition but it has cleared the fault and the message. Interested to see how long it lasts though as there must be an underlying problem which caused it in the first place. Great post and it ,must have saved me a few quid.

Hope you don't mind that I reposted this on a Scenic specific forum. I gave you credit with your user name on this forum.

Hi,

I took my old automatic handbrake apart when I got mine changed out. You have a motor and a PCB and a great big cable. None of the components showed any reason why they should not function properly.

I personally think that the computer in these things go crazy and once they do there is nothing mechanical you can do.

You need Renault Clip to even try to reset it and even then it may come back.

All the original suggestion here does in my experience is to turn the handbrake back on once you have used the yellow handle in the boot to turn it off or release it.

Maybe you could try first turning it off or releasing it (whatever that handle does) and then following the procedure in the suggestion to turn it back on.

I would, however prepare yourself to have to pay a renault agent £590-£720 to put a new unit in for you. I paid an independent renault specialist £590 to do mine, having first had a quote of £720 to from renault franchise.

Probably not too helpful, but my pennies worth anyway! Hope you get it sorted without emptying your account!

Hi,

I have just purchased a used 2004 Renault Scenic 2. The previous owner told me that the handbrake wasn't working as he had pulled the release cable in the boot one day after it seemed to have jammed and he never got it repaired / fixed.

I have read through this thread and tried the steps outlined (pulling out the lever while pressing the button). However it didn't work for me. There was no noise at all from the motor when I was trying this. Also there is no red LED light on my handbrake button so I am assuming that perhaps the issue is more than just previous owner pulling the release cable!! Any suggestions

We had to pull emergency release for electronic handbrake in boot when battery completely died and someone towed us home. Called out brilliant RAC mobile battery fitting service, who installed new battery and reset electronic brake as well. There's no error message on dash (as I feared there would be i.e. trip to dealer and ££££) and everything's back to normal.:d

Hi All,
I recently purchased a Renault Scenic as a 2nd 'runaround car'!
I too had that Handbrake warning error on my dash which I tried to clear using the mthod specified here.
Only problem is now I've made it worse!!
The car won't start at all now. Has a clicking noise and then multiple clicking noises coming from the back.
The dash was completely blank but it has since come back. The radio and lights still work, however it wont turnover?!
any ideas, please help...

So I have the fault warning too but my handbrake seems to work fine. Tried in forwards and reverse.

I did the reset process mentioned at the start of the thread and heard an additional noise which sounded I suppose like a reset of cables or whatever, but the message persists. I also get Parking Brake On and Off messages

the brakes are quite loud when going on and off...

So any ideas?

Does the noise mean something grinding or sticking as they go on and off - a bit of lube will help somewhere?

Can I reset the message somehow?

All help appreciated

Thanks for this. Had the problem on my 2005 Laguna Estate. Expected the worst, but your reset solved it first time. Thanks

Hi,

I have used this reset tip a few times and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately the handbrake has stopped working again and now this reset won't work. I have bought a used handbrake unit and I am now wondering if I can fit this to my car (I have read these units are programmed to the VIN). Can these be reprogrammed to work on my car or is there any chance i might be lucky and find that it will work anyway?

Any help or info will be appreciated.

When I pull the yellow handle is comes to a solid stop but I cannot sense anything happening.

Am I not pulling hard enought?

What should I hear happening when I pull the handle?
