He probably wanted to go out on a high as he knows full well that Lewis will come back stronger than ever next year and decimate him.

Like Batty said had Lewis had better luck on the reliability front then he wouldn't have won the title.

I am quite surprised to be honest but but maybe he isn't prepared to
take the chance he will be beaten, quit wile your ahead n all that.

Credit to the man - He quit at the top of his game rather than fade away. Also for the best possible reason (family). At the end of the day he is the world champion and has the means and the will to walk away. Congratulations to him.
I guess also he will probably take some satisfaction that his team mate will never have the opportunity to beat him to the championship again.....
