My car made a whining noise in 5th gear only and the other day it started making a clunking sound.
My husband had a look and noticed that a chunk of the cog had sheared off.
It drives fine in reverse and gears 1-4.
Can anybody please offer me any advice on how to sort this problem or an idea of cost.
Other than this my car runs like a dream.

These are a couple of pics to show the damage

The damage is on the right hand cog thingy. Can this bit be repaired or is it a new gearbox???

5th gear gear wheels can be replaced and are not that expensive. About 200 pounds in total for the 2 wheels. He obviously need to inspect all other gears and bearings to confirm there is no additional damage caused by the broken off bits. I bet a pint of good ale he can do it. Will be handy having a gearbox repair manual.

Thanks for the reply. I am so relieved as I was worried I would need to replace the whole gearbox. Gears 1-4 all appear fine but will defo check.
Where can I buy the replacement 5th gear wheels from?
How easy are they to replace? My husband is pretty good when it comes to working on cars so I have every faith he can do it.
Any advice or guidance that you can offer will be greatly appreciated

He has probably already been in touch with Renault who is the sole supplier of these gear parts.
They may also give him some workshop instructions if he asks kindly.
