Hello all.

The Starter Motor.. What a joy it has been to try and source one of these little devices.

First question: After calling / emailing more companies than I have done in the last year.. can anyone tell me is there a definitive part number for a starter motor? I was told by a Renault Dealer that the engine in the Clio is a E7F-708. Only 1 parts supplier out of.. lots.. claimed to have the correct motor after supplying them with the reg and engine type.

Second question: I have read the articles listed on the forum and yes I will check the connections and such if I can find them. I am assuming the starter is located on the front of the engine (nearest the rad) as far as I can see below the battery. If it does need to be changed how is it removed? I can only see two bolts from underneath (assuming I have the right part to begin with) is this all it is held in place with?

Any help would be greatly appreciated but please bear one thing in mind. The car is 40 miles away stranded on a friends driveway (fortunately a good friend) so I cannot nip out to pop the bonnet for a shufty. Cheers to all.

I looked up a mk 1 clio in "a manual" and I dont know if its the right one but it showed a heatshield, lead and 3 bolts and a locating dowel, so watch if you are near a drain the dowel will disapear!
It said mark the dowel on the starter so maybe there are 2 positions

Cheers. This is the reason I am asking I don't have a manual or I would just look it up (the car is not mine it is a friends). I know there is a dowel in there somewhere from the hours of trawling the internet without much success. Still I have no idea if I am looking in the right place. Obviously it has to be attached to the gearbox end to engage the flywheel hence assuming its location.

I found a technical workshop manual online but it only deals with engine specifics so unfortunately that has been no help. If I had the car outside I would take a few pics and post them here to show you what I am looking at but I can't. It would cost me a fortune to keep running up and own to the car being roughly an 80 mile round trip!

UPDATE: Even a specialist dealing with starter motors and alternators has admitted defeat. Supplying them with the reg and engine type came back with more than one part saying maybe they didn't have the correct resources to narrow the part down to one type!! This is bonkers!!!!!!

UPDATE: Another "Renault Specialist" :loser: wanted a photograph of the motor !!!!!!!!!!!!! This is just getting impossible. What is the point of them having lists of parts from QH, AC DELCO, LUCAS etc when they can't cross reference a part without an ID Parade??

I guess that there's more than one possible fit and theyre asking for the pic to make sure that they send you the correct item.......you'd be more miffed if the wrong one arrived


Does the starter try to engage when you turn the key?
Why dont you just bump start the car to get it home?

Thanks Pat but as I said in my previous post, the car is not mine and is 40 miles away. If I had it outside the house it would not be an issue taking the time to strip it down and get the part number, a photograph even a dna sample. :d.

Not griping at you Pat do appreciate any help. I am doing this as a favour for a friend who is currently in hospital (sorry, not going for the sympathy vote) and I want to cover all my bases before I go back down and waste another trip. Just can't fathom how 1 specific engine can have more than one type of starter motor, shouldn't all the E7F-708 engines be the same? And yes I would be miffed if the wrong one arrived but isn't that why they are specialists in the first place? They are the ones after all who numpty's like me are supposed to be going to for advice.

Never had this issue with any other car I have worked on that needed a starter or alternator or such so that is why I am baffled. Only 1 company has ever come up with just one application for this car and yes.... it was a Renault Dealership.

I'll get to the bottom of it one way or another i'll just keep plugging away. Thanks again Pat.

MYSTERY SOLVED! Thanks to Just Renaults who have called me this morning to explain the situation. Renault recalled these cars due to a suspect gearbox. Hence two gearboxes, 2 different starter motors. Had to be a reason for it.. now at least I know. Hope this can help anyone else who gets confused in the future.
