Hi folks,
Looking to buy a renault scenic 1.6 16 valve,103k covered, current owner doesn't know when or if the timing belt has been changed , surely it would have been done at some point, given the mileage ?,
Its a 2006 model

Hi John and Welcome to the Forum :)
If you don't have proof, it wasn't done is the safest approach. Owner playing dumb is a bit suspect imho.
Open the bonnet and check the area around the engine mount of the left top as you face it. Mechanics will generally mark with tippex or scratches the mileage at which it was done.
An 06 should have been done twice based on a 5 year replacement time.
Check the owners manual wallet. Is there a service book with a garage name. You could call them with the reg no.

What Brendan says.
If in doubt but rest of car seems okay, use need to change belt as negotiation.
If rest of car iffy, run, not walk, away.

also ask him for the spare key if you do buy it
