Hi, need a little help finding out what the torque setting should be on the near side drive shaft of a Clio mk2 1.2 16valve. just had the abs ring changed and the torque setting was not used resulting in a split drive shaft, need the torque setting to avoid this happening again if anyone can help.

I take it you are referring to the big nut on the outer end of the drive shaft.

Torque is 250 Nm and as the nut is a once only fitting it should be renewed each time it has been tightened.

As a matter of interest what part of the shaft broke and how was its nut being tightened?

thanks for quick reply, the shaft split off at the wheel side of the cv joint, just past the rubber boot. the metal looks faulty.the thread was marked before being removed then when trying to tighten the nut to get back to the mark there was a cracking noise and the shaft had split.

It takes a helluva lot of force to break a CV joint so as you say it must have been faulty.

No doubt as you have discovered marking a nut and then attempting to tighten it back to its original position isn't a good means of tightening to the correct torque. Nylock nuts just don't work that way.

Also if you renew the nut as recommended it will surprise you how easily it tightens up to the correct torque.
