Hello,

I just wanted to know if there was a way you could eliminate the torsion bar and replace it with a coilover set up such as the highsport or konigsport kit.

If so would there be much moddification involved.

You would have to substantially reinforce the rear end of the car to do this - the usual solution is to cut the front turrets from another car, cut the area over where the rear struts would go, and weld the front turrets into place in the rear of your car - not for the faint hearted by any means and probably well outside the capabilities of most DIYers. That's before you've even consider the bottom mounts for the suspension. The best way would be to adopt wishbones, as the front suspension does, but that again requires significant modification to the shell of the car... You'd also have to accomodate an anti-roll bar of some sort running the entire width of the rear of the car. Lots of fabrication involved! I have seen conversions where the trailing arms were retained, but the torsion bar between them eliminated, thus creating an independent trailing arm set-up - simpler but certainly not ideal due to the odd geometry and high unsprung weight of the original load bearing arms.

Plus, you'd lose boot space (that's the reason, aside from cost, why these cars use a torsion beam set-up - it allows the load bearing elements of the suspension to be mounted much lower in the car.)
