Hi folks, 98 Trafic campervan, only done 18k. Steering feels fairly stiff to me for power assist. How easy should it be? Should the oil be up to the cap on the steering reservoir?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

There should be a gap at the top reservoir between the top of it and the fluid level,there is usually a 'MAX' mark on the side of the reservoir for the fluid and this shouldn't be exceeded.

With the van stationary and the engine running,does the steering get any lighter when you pick the engine revs up a little?.

Cheers Lagdti, I'll check tomorrow about 'fluid level' and 'engine revs'. Steering seems fairly ok when running but pretty heavy when manoevering/cornering.

The steering will always have to work harder when the van is stationary or going slowly,it's when a weak system will show it's ugly head.If it does get lighter when you pick the revs up then you're probably looking at a worn pump.

Thanks Lagdti, I think the pump is suspect. I have a bigger prob at the moment, the MOT showed way OTT emissions.
