An update.
Auxillary drive belt tensioners failed, 3 new ones plus a new alternator because the pulley was damaged and Renault do not make a tool to remove the pulley from the Alternator. £586
Crankshaft oil seal fixed.
disturbed gearbox oil seal at same time, so that's been replaced too.
Found further leak which turns out to be a crack in the engine block. Tried to fix it, in the dealer's for 2 months but they finally gave up.
Traded it in today, dealer sold me a used Espace at cost plus large cash contribution from Renault customer service.
I'm glad I've seen the back of that one.
Great car, but I had a lemon.
Espace drives well, 3.0Dci Initiale. pick it up on Wednesday.
Let's hope lightning does'nt stike twice.

Perhaps once you have got rid of the car, you could give us a note of the reg so that none of the members inadvertedly buy it...

There aren't that many around, so a rogue one could end up on someone's drive.

I will certainly post details and registration of the car after Wednesday.

I have a set of Renault Vel Satis Roof Bars that I bought with the car, if anyone is interested.
Plus a Michelin Pilot Sport 245/45R18 extra load, with only about 5,000m wear that I took off the car when I changed all 4 for Bridgestone's.
PM me if interested.

Message for Vel Satisfied

Hello there, i'm new to the forum and joined to gain knowlege and information about the Vel Satis i'm about to buy.

It's a 2.2DCi Privilage, we've been looking for one for ages and they are few and far between so cant be too fussy but anyway this one is a high miler, over 100,000 but theis is reflected well in the price. Its spected up with leather and satnav, has FSH, was only 1 owner from new (Renault Finance) and is generally in good condition.

I have left a deposit and the garage is making the car ready to drive after its been in the show room for a couple of months.

The problem is that they cant seem to get the stereo/satnav system working. They are reluctant to send it to Renault due to the high cost of diagnostics and so are trying to get is sorted out using renault specialists or something.

Anyway its taking a while now and i'm just wondering is its still worth getting the car if everything else works and trying to get it fixed later. The car is only £6000 and theres nothing else about at that price?

Is this problem caused but the battery being flat for so long? They had to put a jump pack on it to get it started and the dashboard said there was a fault with the handbrake which is electronic. I know these cars are very reliant on battery power so i would assume this was the cause of the problem.

Welcome to the forum. The cry of "Walk away" ain't going to be applicable in your case as the Vel Satis is not exactly a common vehicle (only about 1,000 sold in the UK) so hopefully you'll get everything sorted

I anticipate some useful input from our Vel Satis drivers for you ;)

Hello & Welcome to the forums.

I take this is from a non Renault garage.

As in all Renaults you would need a very extensive warranty with your Velsatis.

I will happily give you the advice of a 'vel satis' driver, I have driven mine since october 2005 , it was 2nd hand with 1 previous owner and so far ( touching every piece of wood in sight) I have only encountered these minor probs:
1, recalled due to being tempramental when starting, but give Renault their due it has been sorted.
2, Door lights on passenger side work when the wind is blowing in the right direction!
3, Drivers door hinge has a slight 'clunk' but i'm sure a bit of WD40 can solve it
4, Door card or rear drivers side door loose
5, Climate control panel has a tendancy to flicker, nothing a slap won't cure.

I love my car and I also love the stares it receives as it passes MOST cars on the motorway!, Yes the tyres are expensive ,yes it is high matenience, yes it's too long to park in tesco car parks......But would I change it???

Never!
Go for the diesel and I'm sure you'll get another 100000 miles from it,I'll look forward to seeing you in the fast lane of a motorway soon!

Thanks for all your input guys.

I've spoken to them again and they have apparently tapped up one of the Renault techicians who is looking at the stereo/satnav after works for pound notes. So far they say that they think there is a problem with the cd player (or whatever it is) in the glove box. It wont open or it wont read the disk or something and they recon the stereo wont function without this working. They are tring to find out about a replacement.

Have any Vel owners experienced anything like this before. I has to be flat batt syndrome surely that caused this, no?

Hi there, I would insist on everything working before you buy it - the cars are so expensive to repair if they need to go to Renault.

£6,000 is still a lot of money to pay for something which isn't fully-functioning.

Indeed, I wont be taking it untill ive checked that everything works, and lets face it, the list is long!!!

I have made myself a checklist however and I've already told them that the test drive will be a long one in order to check everything.

Can you give me any pointers that are specific to the Vel that I may look out for before I buy it. I realize that certain cars have their own little quirks and "features" which I accept if someone else tells me theirs has it too.

Thanks again for your help.

Have you looked on the Renault website for used cars, there was a few on there from main dealers. I'd say £6000 was too much to pay for that car.
Everything is mega expensive to fix.
If you want to know what problems i had with mine, well how long have you got?

Have you looked at autotrader's website? I did a national search, and there are diesels there (from garages) with half the mileage for the same money.

I don't (thankfully) have experience of problems specific to the Vel Satis, but would do the normal checks - make sure everything works, look along the sides of the car for impact damage, check the tyres for uneven wear - on that subject - check that the wheels are on the correct axle points - there is a diagram on the driver's door which indicates what colour valve stemmed wheel goes where. I would ensure that the appropriate cambelt changes have taken place, etc. It is a car after all, but it is the most complicated and rare car that Renault ever made - what that means is, many things can go wrong, its expensive to put right, and not many people know how to do that.

I would advise you to buy on condition, look after it, and keep it under warranty (:: Warranty Works we supply Car Warranties at trade prices ::) is one I currently use, and would happily recommend - good value comprehensive coverage.

Hope all this helps you out.

All the best,

Paul:)

I disagree, I look on the autotrader website everyday incase something new pops up, there is nothing on there for less then £6300 nationwide with diesel and leather. Anyway the update is this they will sell me the carf for £5000 now but without the sat nav working, they think its the cd player in the glove box that needs fixing or replacing and the price of one of these is about £400. However it could be the main unit also, or one or the other. It will be a process of elimination.

However if i have to replace both units it will cost a grand but they've just dropped the price by a grand. If i can get away with just replacing the cd player i'll be quids in.

If you can send me a link to an example with half the mileage for 6 grand i'd be interested to see that but it would also have to be in the south as i'm already traveling from bristol to birmingham for this one and thats a pain.

Thanks for input anyway.

Hi Hugh, on the Privilege & the Initiale, it is the 6 discs through the slot on the dash. For the Expression, its a single disc in the dash.

I only ask because on the A/time its a Pioneer 6 disc system and they are notorius for jamming.

I also think they're c. £600.

That Vel is in Cheshire which is just too far to go but does look like a good one. Anyway it looks like were going for this one now and I was just wondering if someone could tell me how i can check that the auto wipers and headlights work. Isnt it that thing behind the rear view mirror thats the sensor??

So if i literally pour water over it/cover it up with my hand will it make the wipers/lights work??

Thanks for your help.
