I have a work colleague who has brought her car over from France and now intends to stay in the UK for the foreseeable future.

Her French insurance is due to expire at the end of June.
She is going through the process to apply for UK registration plates and MOT, but needs to insure the car with a UK company first, but they seem reluctant whilst still on the French plates. Hence needing VIN insurance . She is also having trouble getting any NCB even though she has held a full French licence for nearly 10 years and never had any claim.
The quotes she has had so far are astronomical just for 3rd party.

The DVLA also want the co2 details / emission info, would this not be on the French log book like it is on a UK one? & as the car is an EU one surely the VIN would give then this info from the international manufacturers data base.

The car is a 2012 French spec Citroen C4 petrol and just coming up to 4 years old.

Not done it but a google on "insuring a foreign car in UK" brings up info and suggests that it is possible for exactly the reason that your friend has.
Chassis Number Insurance
Some of the specialist brokers seem to advertise it and they may be the better ones to talk to rather then the call centres with a script.
Chassis Number Insurance | Online Quotes | ACORN INSURANCE

Cost?
Have they asked for a quote for a month?
May still be high in comparison but cheaper then a full year. Assuming a month is long enough for DVLA to get their act together.

Emissions data?
Same as UK version, EU rules apply across the board AFAIK.
If not on French log book, Citroen Customer Services.
Dunno how helpful they will be but I do know of people who authorities believe should pay London's Emission Charge who have got similar info from the likes of VW with a simple request. Will need info in writing.

Try Anglo / French Fora , this MUST have been overcome before.
Also try the specialist insurers, Adrian Flux et Al (no pun intended).
What about Chris Knott who sponsors us?
Re log book, I went to Germany to get a Grun Plaquette (Basically a, in this case, Euro 4 Emissions Sticker for town use) Used English V5, Fine. Surely the French one Must similarly comply with Euro Doc requirements.

If you happened to be there, fine, but there's no need to go next time.
I just sent a €5 note to the Köln motor registration office with a photocopy of the V5 and a covering note. They sent it in the post. Not doubt you could use any office, we just happen to go to Köln regularly. Google feinstaubplakette koln, or wherever.
But as to the question, yes, they must have confirmed the car was eligible from the VIN on the V5.
We now have it on all the time, where the tax disc used to be.

thanks DD

she is going to bring her French documents in to work next week.

We quickly looked at that web site lunch time in work and she is going to contact a few of the insurance companies mentioned over the weekend.

She is still worried about NCB surely having nearly 10 yrs clean record should be recognised throughout the EU .

Can only suggest the same, talk to specialists not the script followers.
To me NCB is an indication of risk and therefore should reflect in lower premiums. And therefore make no difference where earned.
But would have no surprise that insurance companies see it differently, they just seem to want to gouge out as much as they can.

When I stopped having a company car and went to insure my own, 0 NCB despite letters etc from company showing zero bumps.... but not a named driver on their policy so no credit.
Swintons managed to get me 2 years complimentary from Zurich which got me back on ladder, fine now, full NCB but was expensive for a few years.

Had the same issues with Portugal, both ways. It sounds as if the model is not type approved in UK. Data for this is usually available from the manufacturer in the country of origin (in your friend's case, France). This is a common request for them. Insurance I think you have sorted. Pity the overseas insurance has expired as that would probably have covered the car in the UK for up to three months.
For NCB I have managed to satisfy UK insurers with a letter from my overseas company. Need to speak to the insurers on both sides though (the old fashioned way) as internet quotes are no good for handling this. Maybe a broker can help. They want your business at the end of the day. There are no NCB's per se in Portugal, as here we insure the car and not the driver. Makes a lot of sense. Good luck.

Hi

her French insurance is due for renewal at end June, but DVLA are telling her that she must have a UK policy before plate change, but UK insurance company want UK plates first, hence the catch 22 - chicken and egg situation. I have asked her bring in her documents to work on Monday, maybe her existing insurance company have a UK division and my move her across ?

thanks for input so far guys - open to all suggestions -

Yes. A few years ago I wanted to change 2 motorbikes I'd got from TPFT to fully comp. At some point originally the TPFT had been a cheap option, but kept going up, when I was more flush I thought right get these on fully comp. Got a quote from my usual broker for change to fully comp, and it was much cheaper than what I was already paying for TPFT. I commented as much and she said yes, if you ask for TPFT the insurer assumes that YOU think that you are a risk, and so charge accordingly!

I have told her about 3rd party & fully comp prices. However the only company she had contacted at that point would only offer 3rd party cover on a VIN policy, hence she has asked for help, her car is her baby she bought it new and paid for herself.
