Hello,
from what you have said it sounds like the camshaft dephaser pulley which is a very common failure on the 1.6 16v VVT K4M engine which your modus has. The camshaft dephaser pulley operates the cars variable valve timing. Symptoms of it failing is the shattering noise you mention on start up and I expect it sometimes starts quite lazy and also feels like the engine has not much power on start up. Replacing the faulty dephaser pulley is a fairly big and costly job as not only does the faulty dephaser pulley have to be replaced but as the timing belt goes round the pulley, it is strongly recommended that the timing belt is also replaced as well as the other pulleys, tensioners and also the waterpump. Have a ring round Renault dealers and independent Renault specialists for prices, but before you do that give RCS a call as they may pay for or help towards the repair costs seeing as its a well known fault especially if the car is low mileage.
Harry.
