Sounds like either a top strut mounting seized or a broken front coil spring.

I'd get it back to the dealer asap before the warranty runs out.It might be an idea to get another dealer or independant you trust to inspect it,then if they can see what the problem is you can get it back to Renault, tell them what's causing it and claim on the warranty.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.:)

hi came on here about my headlight, i too have a 2004 clio and it also knocks when i pull off, have found out only when putting steering lock on and it is against kerb, spoken to the local garage they have another car with this knocking, said what i know and they suspect steering rack but were going to look at it then look at mine, keep you informed if you like?

adding to this thread as I can't post one for some reason.
Similar problem with a clicking/knocking noise when i pull away with my steering on full lock to the off side (right), the noise increases as a speed up when pulling away, doesn't happen at any other time or when turned full lock to the near side.
i have a 1.5 02 plate dci 80 therefore think it is an electric assisted rack? any ideas ?

About the knock....

I had a similar problem on my Scenic 2 for about 2 years. It really clunked badly at either end of the steering wheel movement. It passed MOTs OK. Three mechanics looked at it and couldn't find the problem. I know for a fact that two of them said they checked the steering rack bolts! Most said the rack may be worn or have damaged teeth.

Eventually, on a service, the mechanic checked the steering rack more carefully than the others must have done and found a couple of loose bolts. He tightened them up and hey-presto. Solved.

It may be that simple... Fingers crossed for you.

51 plate 1.2 Clio.
I have Knocking and creaking when turning and going over bumps. I noticed can down a little on the front offside. I will be working on car today so i will update.
I strongly suspect a broken coil spring but will check all that has been suggested.

Re: dodgy steering

Hi all glad most of you have sorted their problems, however i have a strange one for you's.

1.2 16v on a 51 plate Ive only had it for a few weeks. Anyway when pulling away the front wheels seemed very loose and rattley - so I put new wishbones and new rollbar bushes on both sides. Seems slightly better but not perfect.

The steering is hard to explain - when travelling at 60 or 70 it drives very straight, however when you input on the steering wheel it feels like you got to get it out of a groove before any effects happen to the wheels. - I changed both TR ends but still the same.
I need it fixed before I let the missus out in it, after all I bought it for her lol.
Any ideas of what i can check ? Whats the steering racks, column, Track rods like on these things ? its done approx 110k
Cheers Lee

Re: dodgy steering

i have a similar problem with my mk2 clio. When i say similar i only mean in the fact that it makes a creaking noise, and only when i turn the wheel to the right?!! It sounds like its coming from inside the car and very close to the steering wheel itself, opposed to further inside the car and under the bonnet, so to speak. Really odd problem. Anyone else experienced anything similar?!

Knocking from under car I have discovered particularly over bumps but sometimes with steering at low speed I have so far discovered to be worn anti roll bar mountings on the wishbone end and they are cheap and easy to replace, about £7 a side from GSF, but I do suspect my CV joint are worn as there is another noise under full lock of which I recognise from what was a few years old Vauxhall Cavalier I had where replacing the CV joints cured it.
