Hi mate,i would put money on fuel running its done every night in Edinburgh in the city, fill the car and take off with a vat free fill and then bin the plate and get a new one for the next run, *******:) cheers Donald.

Sure it didn't fall off? or was it screwed on?

As for fuel running... i'm very tempted by this these days, at 109.9 in Oxfordshire for Shell V-power its beginning to bite.

Get a letter from the police stating that your plate was stolen, that way if something does come of it you have proof from the police that this has taken place and it should help you prove your innocents

It's odd. At work maybe a couple of weeks ago while taking a ciggy break I found both back and front plates of a vehicle thrown over a wall onto our land.
Later in the day I informed a local walk past plod of my find, he radioed through to the mothership who said nothing at all had been reported by the vehicle owner.
