Many thanks for the advice guys, I didn't realise the light switch slaved off the wiper - that would give an expanation for the symptoms (I'm still hoping that it isn't the UCH).

I'll start with looking for obvious wiring problems then get my nose on the job . I'll let you know how it goes...

Here is an update: I managed to get a replacement full switching unit from a local vehicle breakers (included both stalks and the steering wheel mounting). I took both stalk units off this and fitted them. Sucess!! Lights and wipers working once more!

Interestingly, I completely stripped down the original light stalk unit and found a broken wire on the ultra low current connector within the unit. It may be responsible or not - but at least it's all fixed now.

btw - I tried the sniff test (also got my daughter to confirm) but couldn't smell anything untoward on either unit.
