interchangeability F4R-700 and F4R-770

Hello everyone,
My Espace 2001 2.0 16v enginge F4R-700 died completely. Block and cilinder head & 2 pistons and 8 valves etc.

Got a great offer on a F4R-770 2003.

BUT are these interchangeable? Does anyone know whether this will work?

I have my doubts about the place where the gearbox is linked whether they'll be the same. My gearbox is JC5 and the one on the new engine is a ND0 (6 gear).

Living near amsterdam but hope to get more response from the bigger country (-:

Thanks in Advance
Michiel

700 and 740 engines should be pretty much the same.

I know it's not much use to you here is a photo replacing a Scenic engine from above and the A/C compressor is unbolted from the engine but still connected to the A/C sytem.

I don't know wether it is possible to change the engine like this in an Espace? or if the engine has to be removed from below the car in any case I would think it must still be possible not to empty the A/C?

Yep, actually you are right. The 740 would have worked instead of the 700 as well. The 770 was going to have the problem with the waterpumps.

Indeed I was about to go for the 740 when I got a call about the 700 being available and just went for that just to be sure, and it was cheaper and I didnt have to go pick it up myself...

Here a quick update.
This post wont give an answer to the posted question, because I found an F4R-A700.

The waterpumps of the 740 that I had found in the meantime and 700 are different. Supposedly the gear box was not gonna be the problem, but the F4R-700 has waterpump on outside driven by multi-belt and F4r-740 has waterpump not on the outside and driven by cam-shaft belt. End of story there.

Now next question: suddenly the guy who was/is gonna build in the engine, says that "the whole car front" has to be taken off. Airco taken out/emptied. And it will take upto 30 hours of work! Is he serious? He seems to be, but is he realistic or am I being ...over now that I finally have the engine?

Any serious estimates would be very welcome so I can come to more realistic time-range estimate with him.

Thanks for any replies

Have you got the engine numbers misxed up? The engine on the left in the photo above is a F4R-740 and that has an auxlliary driven water pump the pump is still on the engine.

Sorry I can't answer that question only ever having changed Scenic engines and it certainly doesn't take me 30 hours.

I unbolt the A/C compressor from the engine so as not to have to empty the refrigereant.

Well thanks for this extensive and informative reply mr recycled scenic.

The prob is indeed not the gearbox but the water pump and indeed it isn't going to work. F4R 770 has pump in engine - driven by distribution belt ( I think cam belt in english) while the 700 has pump on outside of engine, driven by the 'multi-belt'.

In the meanwhile I've found a F4R-740 with 89000 km on it, and this one does have the pump in the same place/way and gearbox should be interchangeable. So this is what I'm going to go for.

Thanks for all your help. I'll try to post an update when I'm on the road again with the espace.

I don't think it's the gear box you are going to have to worry about. Though the crank shaft hole PCD's are different between automatic and manual engines so you can't bolt a fly wheel and clutch to an automatic crank shaft and vice versa with a torqe converter to a manual engine.

The 2.0 F4R & 1.8 F4P as fitted in the Scenic and Megane from 1999 to 2003 are externaly identical it's only the bore size thats different. The same 2.0 F4R engine was fitted in the Clio until 2005 though the air intake is different. All these engines have auxilliary driven water pumps. I'm not sure if the same engine was fitted in the Espace?

The F4R & F4P engines where re-designed and the water pump was then driven by the cam belt and I know fitted in the Laguna from 2001 to 2005 and the Megane and Scenic from 2003. I don’t know what other models these where fitted in? This redesign uses a different and much simpler alternator, A/C compressor and PAS pump mounting bracket. The PAS pump and alternator are different with different size pulleys as the crank pulley is a different size. The A/C compressor is mounted much lower on these engines. The Scenic and Megane from 2003 have electric powered PAS.

I would think as long as the water pump arrangement on the F4R-770 is the same as your F4R-700 then you should be able to unbolt and swap items around from one engine to the other as I think the air intake system will be different?

I have replaced a 2.0 F4R in a 2001 Scenic with 2002 1.8 F4P from a Laguna shown in the photo. I have had to cut and weld the cross me member to allow for the lower mounted A/C compressor as the mounting brackets are not interchangeable between the 2 types of engine. I have also had to use and modify the inside of the upper older F4R cam belt cover as the cam belt was rubbing on the inside of it because the cam belt routing is slightly different.
