Hi all,

I hope there is somebody reading that can solve this puzzle.

My 65 Kadjar 1.6 DCI at 53k miles is coming up with an error on the dashboard: Electrical Failure - Danger - STOP; and a few signs that can be symptoms of quite a few problems:
  • "Check Stop - Start" message'
  • Generic P2503 ( charging system voltage low)
  • Engine not cranking sometimes - dashboard goes back to "OK" - you can hear clicking from the fuse box. It would jump start after 5-10''
  • Battery voltage when the error is on is <14 (around 12v and dropping) which hints that isn't charging. Battery health checks were good, it just needed charging they said. To admit that it could be between 2 and 6 years old.
  • Cruise control not working when error is on.

Car drives just fine even when the error is on, but I think that the battery drains in the meantime. Dealer is asking for >£100 just for the diagnosis and I'd like to save it or spend it for a battery or the other possible broken piece than paying their crazy hour rate.

What would you guys advise?

Many thanks 🙌

Reality? .............. chances are you need a new battery and to have it properly configured.

Any guesswork may be educated or based on experience, but can very easily turn out to be a waste of both time and money.

Correct solution is to get your own Renault speaking scanner (CLIP or Autel AP200white etc etc) and with the help from here do some sleuthing.

Seems to be a common problem with the kadjar , that said the stop start playing up and all the faults ,, could be the battery they do get some hammered !! and if its not had a new one from new it will definatly need one i would think , but has LVR as said maybe best to look deeper into it , have you taken the car to say kwikfit to ask for a battery test ? its free and ask for the result sheet , they will try to sell you a battery but if you have a knackered a battery ??... may not solve it though , but if it twas me ...

Needs a decent check on both alternator and battery.
My initial guess would be failing battery but is a guess, just based on that this is the sort of thing that failing batteries cause and that the battery could be up to 6 years old.

The problem with a forum like this is that the people with problems will bemoan their situation at length and bore us to death with personal opinions and financial constraints etc etc etc ...............

and then when known sensible suggestions are made they will sod off - either while experiencing bliss at solving the problem or miffed because even here not much money can be saved if the job is to be done in a sensible fashion on a modern vehicle ................... and off-course they never bother to report back so that other members with the same problem can benefit from the school fees paid.

So @Jonathansla - describe your specific symptoms and all faultfinding steps/measurements taken in detail - please don't assume we know everything - we can however try to help with sensible suggestions based on experience if we have all the non-subjective facts.

There really is only one way to tackle this imo - you need a Renault-speaking scanner yourself and a way of measuring the alternator output/battery voltage while driving in order to be able to log what exactly is going on.

Do you have a small gauge wire connected to the battery going down to a box-like thing close to the battery (usually negative battery terminal) - this thing measures charging current/load and often contains a fuse that blows and disables the charging system?

Hi my kadjar has just done same problems this morning, I heard a pop what seemed like coming from fuse box and same fault came on dash Danger electric fault and my heated windscreen and cruise control on steering control not working.. did anyone find what the fault was hopefully just a fuse when a get them checked??

Good morning,

sorry everyone for the late reply and the lack of update.
Unfortunately Renault mechanics couldn't diagnose the fault properly and made me spend around 1k in battery and alternator.
They initially linked the fault code to a bad alternator after keeping the car for two days: they've apparently checked the whole circuit from the alternator to the battery and their computer suggested it could have been the alternator undercharging.
Unfortunately after changing the alternator with a new one the fault was still there, so they've offered to free diagnose the car again. At this time the fault was different and they suspected the voltage control unit or the current sensor (Idk if they're the same part).
I'm not feeling confident to pay more to fix the car and find out what it is especially due the lack of logic and common sense the main dealership are operating under when is due to fixing. They just follow what their 20k computer says even if it doesn't make any sense compared to the driver description of the problem and start changing and charging 2-3 parts in a process of elimination (obv making you pay for them).
For this reasons I can't be of any further help, but I would suggest to instruct your trusted garage to exclude the potential problems from the cheapest one!
Hope this helps.

Please please Check the earth cable between the Battery and Gearbox connection point !! This is exactly the same problem I had replaced Battery and alternator total cost £400 and still had same problems. Cleaned original lead connection point and fitted EXTRA earth lead cost £5 and problem SOLVED .please check this first !!!

Hi all......searching the forum for my current problem and this looks to what I have.

1st occurrence approx. 2 weeks ago (on holiday), car been fine all week, packed up ready to come home and car wouldn't start. Just clicking noise, nothing turning or trying to turn initial fault message being 'Brake System Fault' - tried again and other fault message came up 'Cruise Control', 'Hill Climb' etc....

Called the AA, he started the car by jump starting - confirmed battery was flat. he put on his magic gear and confirmed that Alternator was supplying charge (70 plus Amps) to the battery. He suspected that a door was not closed, interior light left on and even mentioned about the battery in key fob....

Move on 2 weeks......same thing happened again, same fault codes, same messages and same noises when trying to start. Only this time I was at home.

By initial thought is to change the battery, but that will get me going I am not convinced its the whole fix...

Any thoughts ?

When my previous Clio did similar thing - no start, random messages - it was the battery.

one day it started fine and I took it out of garage. An hour later it wouldnt start so we called AA - he couldn't jump start the car, so replaced battery and all was fine.

Worth checking battery?

I need to check the battery but don't think that is the issue - if battery was low on volts or not charging the you will get a message.

On a side note my partner has a Clio and about a month back her Clo had Red Stop Light with battery charging fault message being displayed - got it to a garage and found the alternator belt had snapped completely off....

Ive checked mines its still there.

I have a 2017 Kadjar, and had been out of the country for 3.5 weeks. Came back to "Red Stop Light with battery charging fault" message being displayed. Sounds as if the cause could be anything from worn out earth lead, worn out alternator belt to a discharged battery. Will start by having the battery tested at Kwik-Fit and take it from there. :(

I have had the same issue with my 2019 Kadjar, Renault couldn't diagnose it for days on end and were taking advice from renault Frabnce, who then said it needed a new ECU which cost us just under £2k. a week later its broken down again and gone back into the garage, same fault. they are now saying it is some issue with the battery. Is a new ecu at 6 years usual? I want to argue this wasn't needed

I'd like to join in this forum as my 69 reg Kadjar has been exactly the same. It started last year, the alarm would go off and the STOP sign come on with "Electrical hazard warning". To cut a long story short... I had the alternator changed, that didn't clear it. Then on one occasion when it went I called the AA out. He said it was the battery sensors (but the battery was charging fine) and provided an in depth report. I then got it booked in with my dealership (it was under warranty) and provided the report so they changed the sensors. It worked and I've not had any problems with it until recently. It has gone again four times in the last couple of weeks but each time it has been a really hot day and the battery light comes on. Each time I stop the car and that clears it and then I go on my way again (not ideal if I'm on a motorway!). I'm wondering if the very hot weather we are experiencing is now affecting the battery and the sensors?

Hi, Exactly the same issue with my 2016 Kadjar over last 6 months. RAC came again today as wouldn't start - clicking noise only, and had "Electrical failure - danger!" yesterday. Test showed reasonable battery voltage and alternator charging ok. Engineer told me he knew of other Kadjars with same problem, 1.6 only apparently, where the problem was identified as faulty earth plate. Suggested same solution as proposed in post #24 above from Andy - extra earth lead. I'm getting one as soon asap
