Laguna Coupe Stop Vehicle warning

Hiya I couldn't find anything that matched my issue using search, I cant find anything in the drivers handbook either, hope you can help please.

I have a 2008 Laguna coupe 2.0GT with 36k miles, I bought it used about two years ago at 29k miles and it came with full service history and its been serviced three times while in my care and its wants for nothing. The car has gave me no issues so far apart from service items.

Today something weird happened, I decided to give the interior a very quick clean and as the car was last used three days ago I started the engine and let it idle. I gave everything a quick wipe down, shook out the mats and I was in the back of the car cleaning the seats with the drivers door open when a high pitched alarm similar to the one that would sound if a door was opened with the handbrake released sounded and the warning system screen on the dash was flashing red with the words 'Stop Vehicle' displayed.

No other info or warning lights were showing apart from this and everything else on the dash appeared to be fine, the handbrake was engaged and I had checked all fluids and did a load test on the battery before starting it and all appeared good. I decided to shut the engine off to be safe and finish cleaning then investigate so shut the engine off and removed the keycard.

A few mins after this I had the passenger door open and I was cleaning the seat with the engine still switched off when to my surprise the alarm sounded again and stop vehicle message was again displayed and flashed in red on the dash. This sounded for a few seconds and then it silenced and appeared to reset but started repeating over and over again every 30 secs or so. Why would this be displayed when the engine isnt running?

Could this be an electronic handbrake related issue?

Thanks very much.

You may have answered your own question in saying that the warning and light are similar to what would happen with the door open and handbrake off. In both cases the door was open. Could be handbrake related but I would start by checking the battery is OK and fully charged (working with the car door open will drain the battery, sometimes even with the engine on idle). A poor battery can cause all sorts of spurious warnings - I know from bad experience. I am guessing there are no problems or warnings when driving. Rule out the obvious and easy first.

My Scenic battery was 6years old when I left the car unused for a few days. Admittedly it was quite flat when I opened the car doors but as soon as I switched on "Gearbox overheating", "Check Injection", "Stop Vehicle" all came on in succession.

+1 for the battery. Renaults like lots of volts and Lagunas like them even more.
We've not had your particuler thing- usually just(!) the alarm going off- but our occasional battery problems weren't banished for good (touch wood) until we put it in the garage and did an overnight top-up charge every three weeks (four isn't enough).

I assume you weren't washing the inside so would not be a water related issue you caused.
But could you have dislodged a sensor (brake/clutch) with the vacuum?
Otherwise, battery as others have said, doors open will drain a battery, amazing how much goes live when you unlock a motor.
I'd check alternator output as well, may not be happy at tickover.

Thank you all very much for your help. Lol no water used just dust pan and brush, and leather cream :)

Yep, It seems to be the battery was the problem. Battery was 12.2V and when put on a charger went to charged within a few mins. I put a load tester on it again and it failed the test second time around.

I got the battery replaced as it was still within the manufacturers warranty and so far so good, I took it for a drive of 30 miles or so with no issues.

With lights, air con, cd player, demister on engine at idle i get around 13.77V and revving a bit 2.5 - 3k rpm around 13.9V, im thinking thats ok for alternator output.

Hopefully its sorted.

Thanks again.
