hello

i have a 2010 megane 3 1.5 dci fap with just over100k miles. a few weeks ago the 'engine damage risk' warning came up, error code p242f. the local renault dealer did a full diagnostic, result fap blocked. they then performed a forced regeneration which sorted the error. Less than 50 kms later, same warning comes up, back to dealer who tried another forced regeneration but i would not work. they now say the fap needs replacing at a cost of £1800...when i asked what caused the fap to block there was no answer. the car is used for daily commutes of around 20 miles each way and the occasional longer trip on motorways.

other than replacing the fap, any advice please on what other things to check/try, not too keen to replace it without knowing the cause of blocking.

thanks

You can buy a cleaner that you put inside the dpf and it will break down the soot,,
But you still have to get the DPF off, an after market DPF on your car is 480£.
BUT always a but, its getting any pipework/sensors fitted onto/in the dpf out..
These very rarely come out without destroying them...

Hence the cleaning fluid , ..
If it was my car. I would be using a cleansing fluid, I would be ignoring any sensor readings at this point, until I got clear water running through the DPF after the cleansing fluid..

thanks, yes i think next step after testing the pressure sensor as suggested is to have a go at trying to clean the dpf off the car. Will have to cut the exhaust to take the dpf off a it's all in one piece. Already had a look at taking the temp senor out and I doubt it's going to come out in one piece so will leave that in when cleaning dpf. Will any engine cleaner/degreaser be ok?

Pressure sensor wont read, no pressure.. so putting a new one on, or testing the sensor wont help,
Would take the DPF off, and clean it.
Either way its got come off,.
JUST make sure you get the back part of the exhaust to the DPF off first, as easier to do on the car, than take the front part off and try and get the back off afterwards

hi

I have taken the DPF off, pressure washed it form both sides, filled it with liquid engine cleaner and let it soak overnight. When washing it with the pressure washer I noticed some bits of what looked like the filter coming out so after soaking it overnight I rinsed it out repeatedly from both sides with a garden hose instead. Lots of gunk came out. Stopped when I had clear water running through it and now it's standing in the sun to dry. I forgot to take the reading from the disconnected pressure sensor, rubber hose looks fine though.

I'll leave it to dry for a few days, if it's worked as hoped, after putting it back on is anything special required, ie forced regeneration, or should it just work if all is ok?

i haven't got round to putting the dpf back on, but having a look at it this morning, it looks like the pressure washer may have been too much for the catalytic converter side of the unit (dpf and catalytic converter are in one piece on this car). It's taken chunks of it out, see pic. Any harm in fitting it like this?

If all the broken pieces are out of the flow path, then mechanically I doubt it will cause you drama. If you check and confirm the pressure sensor port/tube/pipes and actual sensor is clean and ok, then chances are it will still work - you will have a reduced efficiency/capacity of the cat though. Id say assemble and test - DPF part is bound to be sorted - at worst you are now at the point where the garage was initially............... iow to replce the dpf.

This experience will be very good reference for future readers - would appreciate your further feedback if you do fit and try it

Its a silver tailgate with top opening window, ( 20£ taken off for him ) Its not me you see, its the lad driving it,. I am clean shaven again, kids bought me a beard trimmer, not got used to it yet, and put a stripe down the side of my face..
I used the Astra , when mine was off the road.(had to get mine sorted, would end up with a driving ban, cars should not be allowed to be that fast , )
Mine is all up and running again, done 10 miles in it, I know, I drive too much ..
But today, it went back up to 22.4 mpg, how good is that..

megane 3 1.5 dci fap

Must get my glasses checked or at least take them out of the drawer. [emoji1]
Thought it was you on the newspaper run buddy.
My old man asked me two weeks ago if you’d service his shogun in March (2010 model with 7k on the clock), good job I didn’t rush though, the mad bugger showed up on Thursday in a brand new outlander phev [emoji1]
Glad baby is fixed, look on the brighter side, you’ll be able to carry more tools...

Hi all

I have put it all back together today and cleared the fault codes. Took the car for a test drive, got 'stop' message and fault code for the temp sensor within 500 mtrs, cleared that as I thought perhaps there is still some liquid in the dpf that may affect sensor readings and trigger fault codes. Drove 15 miles or so in 4th gear keeping the revs around 2500/3000, fault code did not come back and it attempted two dpf regenerations which both failed. Then did a forced dpf regeneration to see if that would work, it took approx 15 mins and the diagnostic software said completed successfuIly.

The soot level before the dpf cleaning was around 60g, after I put it back together it (oddly?) still read 60g, after the initial test drive but before the forced regen it read 18g (maybe the ecu needs some time to recalculate things). After the forced regen it stil read 18g.

Drove another 30 or so miles, according to the diagnostic sw it did not attempt further regenerations but oddly it alo does not list any successful regeneration, should it not at least list one, the forced regeneration?

The temp. sensor fault code has not come back yet, but there is a fault dtc02033a on injector 3, this has been there in the past and was put down previously by renault to a an issue with the injector connector.

So in summary, the cleaning seems to have lowered the level of soot, it seemingly did a forced regeneration successfully, but this could just be down to the dpf having been cleaned and the ecu 'thinking' it has successfully completed a regeneration. I have not yet seen a successful other regeneration. I guess I'll just have to drive it to see what happens. All sensors seem to provide data, attached a snapshot taken at engine idle. Any feedback on the sensor data welcome, ie does that look 'normal'.

thanks all

particle filter differential pressure ..................... down from 55 to 5 .................nice!:grin2:

Drive the thing and see - dont expect a regen every trip.

Sort the injector ................... its going to possibly again clog the dpf and prevent the start of auto regens and even prevent manual regens.:frown2:

Regen WILL NOT happen with most ECU errors present

got 'stop' message and fault code for the temp sensor within 500 mtrs
? .............. which temp sensor what exact code? ........... you may be right - some moisture still needed to get burned out of a hidden pocket somewhere

You need new oil!
