Hi all,

I think this might be a bit obscure, but was hoping someone could help.

My Indicator stalk is worn and often doesn't self cancel. I bought a cheap eBay one for about £13 and once fitted, it worked absolutely fine.

However, when I tried to put the column shroud back on, it is out of line with the hole. the stalk dust cover is catching on it stopping it working properly and there is a gap that you can see through.

I was going to return it, but the return cost made it not worth it. I had another go yesterday, thinking I probably hadn't pushed it home properly, but it is definitely as far as it can go, and the direction it would need to move to align with the hole in is not the same direction as the way it moves into the socket. I tried sitting one on top of the other and it does look like one stalk is as a slightly different angle to the other, but it could just be my b*ggered eyes!

What my question is - has anyone experienced this before? I'm assuming this is a cheap part issue, but I have seen people on the internet saying they bought cheap ones and they just slotted in fine.

I also noticed yesterday that because mine is a Sport, there is an extra position on the twist for front fogs which the replacement doesn't have - I forgot to check that when I bought it. I don't suppose this would make a difference to the fit?

Any help you can give will be appreciated. I am not bothered about losing the £13, but would like to get it right next time and am happy to not have an official Renault one if it works and fits fine.

This is the only pic I have at the moment trying to show the difference in angles the stalks come out from the bases (original Renault one is on top). I totally get this could just be a trick of the eye/camera but when you put the column cover back on with the new one, the stalk is right at the back of the cut out hole and there is about a 1/2 inch gap between the front edge of the hole and where the shroud of the stalk starts. It's almost if you have pushed the stalk backwards away from the driver to put main beams on, but obviously these Renaults only click forwards.

If you put the original one back on, there are no gaps and the stalk is central to the hole.

I hope I am making sense here. I was hoping someone might say "I bought x one from y selller and it fitted fine with no fettling" which might help me with confidence to have another punt at it.

Ok, so an update on this one. Apologies to @ours2012 but I was being lazy and couldn't be bothered to stake it all apart again to take photos, so....

I decided to take another punt and bought another eBay special, but this time with the correct front fog light switch. It fit fine, but the fog switch was hard to turn and making a crunching noise, and if I flashed the main beam, it indicated left! I also noticed that if you had it off the van and tried to cancel the indicators by flicking the tab that sticks out, it was really stiff and hard to do.

I messaged the seller and he sent me another one, FOC. This one works in terms of all functions, except the cancel is also really stiff so the indicators are not self cancelling at all.

In conclusion - DON'T BUY CHEAP CHINESE KNOCK OFFS ON EBAY!

I still don't know if the ones with front fogs are different and that is why the one without the switch didn't fit, or if it was just another poorly made one.

I also don't know if the ring on the column is worn and won't flick the switch properly when turning. The original issue that I got the replacement for was that my Renault one was a bit floppy and the indicators didn't always self cancel, but did most o the time. The first one I bought (the one that didn't fit the cowling and didn't have the front fog switch) worked fine and cancelled every time when testing on my driveway.

I'm thinking that now I have 4 indicator stalks, I may try taking one apart and seeing I can make one good one out of them all. I can see the original one has screws but think the copies are all sealed. We'll see,

Just another update - the last one I fitted (in post above) was working fine except the indicators wouldn't self cancel. In the end, I saw a post online where a guy had taken his apart and cleaned it up. The original Renault one is screwed together, so I took mine apart and cleaned it up, The only issue with the original one had been the not-cancelling thing, so I probably didn't need to clean it up, but it did look quite worn inside. I cleaned up the contacts and put it back together, and put it back on the van. Everything works, and the indicators do now self cancel - apart from the occasional time. I think it is mainly when the wheel comes back from a hard right turn.

I assume the previous owner and myself have been trying these too-stiff ebay knock-offs and as they resist being flicked, it has worn some damage into the tabs on the steering column that are meant to flick them.

I have searched the internet, but I can't see how this "ring" around the column looks, or how you would buy/fit one?

I am thinking I may try and take the first one I bought apart and see if I can change the stalk/connections over to make one good one (and one that fits). They don't have screws but appear to be clipped together.
