But the cars currently sorn and hasnt been run since nov 11, the cars engine has been turned over for 10 mins or so near enough every day since but it seems that the battery has flattened itself and now my roof doesnt want to work electronically anymore, now i can use the manual release cord and open the rear storage space of the roof open, from here the roof can be opened and closed electronically and it can be done several times no problem, i can turn off the ignition and come back the next day and bam! 5 beeps and the roof doesn't work.
Ok reading from above the hood operation itself is hydraulic, the position sensors, ecu and the hood cover latching motor are electric.
So you are saying that once you have pulled the release cord the hood operates normally? via the switch??

You should hear a continuous beep once the hood is unlocked and pushed up, if you hear the 5 beeps then the hood is not in a start/finish position have you tried to manually put the hood through a complete open and close procedure? then try using the button operation?

Thinking about the battery once your car is started and assuming it is being charged the hood should operate, if when you car is running and sometimes it will operate and sometimes not then you probably would need to be looking for a supply fault?

Hope this helps a little more.

Regards

My daughter recently tried to get the hood on her 51 Renault Megane reset.

She had turned off the ignition on the car while operating the hood and this had caused the hood system to get extremely confused. Following the directions in the drivers handbook we released the hydraulics (for hood cover) by using a small tap in the boot and then as directed pulled the release strap found in the small compartment in the luggage area.

What we didn’t know is this is a no return situation and the mechanism (similar to a bonnet release catch) will disengage and there is no way of getting it easily back into place.

The Renault garage mechanic charged 1 hours labour to diagnose that the complete release mechanism needs replacing - £405 including VAT.

SO...This morning I removed the mechanism and quickly re-seated the release catch and then reassembled the mechanism. The hood now operates completely fine. There was absolutely no reason to change the mechanism.

The whole job took me just under an hour – bearing in mind I am a computer engineer and not a car mechanic and know nothing about Renaults at all..

To prevent this happening to others I have included a very quick guide of what to do if this happens again. I realise this will not fix all Renault hood problems but should at least be tried first and 1 hour labour should do it…

1) Release hydraulics on hood cover by undoing the small tap located in the boot (under left hand carpet in boot)
2) Pull manual release for boot cover – located in the boot area <> rear seat compartment (Step 1 and Step 2 better documented in the owners manual)
3) With the Hood nearly closed (but with the back window in the air !) and the hood cover opened – by hand, remove the 2 nuts that hold the rear seat onto the rear bulkhead.
4) Now use a star / torque drive to remove the 4 screws that hold the hood release mechanism onto the rear bulkhead.
5) There is no need to disconnect any cables just remove from the cable clips.
6) The release mechanism can now be viewed easily. Look to re-engage the cam that the emergency release cable is attached to into the metal arm that is driven from the worm gear on the motor.
7) May need to engage small micro switches on the mechanism to get the worm gear to operate (do this very carefully and by holding the switches on while operating the hood from inside the cab. (need 2 people for this) Operate the hood only for short 1-second bursts until the worm gear allows the cam to drop easily back into place.
8) All above sounds complicated but actually when you have the mechanism laying in front of you in the hood storage space area its very straight forward and should take 30 – 40 minutes maximum for someone who has seen it once before.

thanks to others on this forum - I tried and succeeded in saving over £400 in repair bills. I have now asked the Renault gave to refund the £40 charged for wrong diagnosis - they obviously dont have access to this website :)

Hi there, same problem, my partner at the time turned off the eninge as the roof was going down, now when i try to get the roof down it just beeps. I also get the bleeps everytime i turn my engine on too. I have followed the online instructions as close as possible and i have located the whole thing, screws Etc but i'm not really sure what i'm supposed to be doing after this, can anyone provide specific instructions? should the car be turned on? should i turn on the hydraulics again after unscrewing everything..? i would really like your help as its been 2 years now and i would love my roof to work! please please help,

thanks in advance

hi all new to the forum but i thought i would inform any users that are having probloms with the closing of the cabriolet hood that there is a micswitch on the passengers end of the hood itself as i was having probloms with my hood opening and closing i clicked that microswitch after doing all the usual things like pulling the the cord thing and releaseing the mechinism and resetting the worm gear i also had the cllick the microswitch on the hood itself so in total there is 4 microswichs on the megane cabriolet 3 on the lock and the 4th is on the hood near where the speaker is on the hood itself hope this helps any people so yoiu dont fall foul like i did i replaced every part on the hood and all i had to do was click the reset switch yeah what a dumb ass

I just brought a 1999 megane 16v 1.6 and when I brought it the guy showed me how to put the roof down, undo the handle near the rear view mirror, push the dash button, get out, open the boot, fold the roof down.

Could it be that its broken and should work automatically? I just assumed it was a manual roof!!

I have a 98 cabriolet and its all automatic after undoing the handle and pushing the button :d

hi, could someone tell me where the nylon strap to manually release the roof on a 2008 megane dynamique is located, i looked in handbook but can't find it. thanks glyn

I too have a roof problem with my mk1.2002 model.it worked when i bought it.now it has stopped working. I have done the usual manual trick twice by pullingthe cord in the boot, turning the 't'' piece anti clockwise and raising /lowering the hood manually but its very heavy.I took it to my mechanic who said it might be the switch near the gear lever, because there is power getting to the motor but it sounds very low,and isnt enough to lower it.He suggested buying another switch to test it.But ive seen them for £25 on ebay..Will it defianetly be the motor,if so i will buy a 2nd hand motor only.Help

 hi all I have the same problem and it is driving me nuts trying to get it working again I can open and close the roof manually by pulling the release cord and turning the T key in the boot but I cant seem to get the roof working by pressing the button just getting beeping sound or sometimes when I have pressed the sensors the flap just goes up and down then stops what am I doing wrong is there a certain order I have to press these sensor thingys I have found 2 in the latch and one on the passenger side on roof mechanism is there any more of these hidden ?
has any one posted on you tube or any were a video of how to do this ?

please please help me my Renault megane is 1999 1.6 with only 50000 miles she is my baby and just need to get her better :)

I don't know if this helps but it has worked for me on three occasions. This needs two people. When you inadvertently cut the power to the pump in any way you loose hydraulic pressure, the boot lid drops down some way and disengages a switch thus confusing the mechanism. Get somebody to hold the boot lid up while you operate the switch (Engine running of course). It worked for me and I have since discovered it suggests the same answer in the handbook.

Not many cabrio owners on here. You'll get more help if you can post a picture of the microswitch, with dimensions or a 50p coin beside it.

I just bought a '98 Megane Cabrio that was sold with defect electric roof. Manual operation only. And with couple of other "minor" mechanical issues and ONLY with studded winter tires! :forehead: Which are naturally illegal to drive in the summer... I just could't pass the deal.

The symptoms were that the top would only lift the rear flap up, and stop there. The lid pull/push motor would run and the hydraulic pump would run. But that's as far as it would go, and just beep five times.

Well, having toyed with cars for over 25 years, I naturally wouldn't take that by face value. I read this thread and looked at the ragtop-lid release mechanism. You only just have to pull the carpet away. You don't have to bolt the mechanism out. Anyways, here's in short what I did:

1) Run the top to all the way down position.
2) Open the ragtop handle and lift the top a little.
3) Open the hydraulic release valve in the trunk. (Left hand side wall behind the tire well. Turn the screw all the way counter clockwise.)
4) Pull the emergency release strap at the far end (middle) of the trunk.
5) Lift ragtop (front) all the way to normal position (when opening the top).
6) Lift the rear (flap that has the window) of the top all the way up (by hand).
7) Lift the ragtop lid all the way up (by hand) and prop it there.
8) Remove the carpet on the lid lock/unlock motor on the bulkhead.
9) Look at it from the rear while pulling the emergency strap. You should see what kind of mechanism it operated. You can move this mechanism up and down by hand.
10) See how the locking mechanism moves a lever sideways when you push/pull it up&down.
11) Align the (bottom) end of this sideways lever to the peg on the motor screw (towards the rear of the car). That peg moves down when you pull the emergency strap. All you have to do is get the lock mechanism lever to fall onto the peg.
12) Thats it! - Put back the carpet, let the ragtop lid close.
13) Close up the hydraulic pressure release valve (all the way clockwise) and put back the carpet.
14) Run the top open from the dashboard switch as normal.

For me that did the trick. I now have a fully functional roof again!
It took me 30 minutes to figure everything out. Now I can fix the top in 5. It's really that simple! :mechanic:

And a big thanks to myredsportscar as it was his post that really helped me to understand the "problem".

Liking this post slightly but....
1. Run the top to all the way down position?....down as in closed or down as in roof open?
2. Open the ragtop handle?....and lift?? (not sure what 1 means now??)
5. What is normal position?

Someone really needs to do a sticky on these roofs as the information is bloody terrible for them...ive been in the trade 22 years & i aint found one post yet that explains howto reset/fix the megane 1 convertible roof.

Thanks for pointing out my inconsistencies. Also I didn't find edit-button for my previous post, so I'll just have to reply...

1) Close the top. (Now that I think of it, I should have naturally written top up. But I had the mental picture of the rear flap of the top, which has to be down for the top to be closed...)
2) Unlock the top by the manual (locking) handle by the rearview mirror. Lift it open just a bit (5-10 cm).
5) Now lift the top (by the above mentioned handle) to the normal position you would when opening the top (30-40 cm). Where it usually beeps. (This will take off the tension from rear flap and let you lift it up by hand.)

I don't really think that makes a difference, as to first open the roof just a bit and later more. But I just wanted to write exactly what I did. JUST in case it makes a difference.

Also a note that I did have the ignition switched off until the point (14) when I closed the top with the dashboard switch. After that it opened and closed as normal. (Which was naturally all new to me, as I'd never seen this car with the top down...)

I have a similar problem but when I release the front handle and push up, I get the bleep.
I then push the button for the roof to open but nothing happens except 5 beeps.
The rear portion of the roof is supposed to lift up hydraulically but this does not happen and I have already reset the micro-switches numerous times.
It is like the pump is not working as there is no noise or movement and I cannot locate the power fuse to test that.
Any help would be fantastic thanks

Steve
