The symptoms you describe are similar to what my 2.0 16v VVT engined Espace did when the dephaser was failing/failed. I don't know if the engines are the same in the two cars though. My car is a 2004 reg also.

Would You say that all the symptoms are the same or is it only the diesel sound? I´ve heard that the dephaser (must be the same as the vanos?) causes the diesel sound but could it also cause the idle speed problems i described?

Some models gave an anti-stall switch on the clutch pedal so it may be worth checking if your model has one fitted and if so have it checked out. Although it wouldn't cause an engine rattle or knock.

 

Hi, the symptoms on my car were: continuous diesel like clatter, very uneven running especially when cold and a risk of stalling at junctions.
Once the dephaser was replaced everything settled down.

When I presented my car to the dealer for repair the mechanic was surprised the engine was still clattering after having taken an hour to get there - from that comment he made I suspect most quieten down after a while, but until repaired mine clattered continuously.

Sounds like I have to open up my wallet and have the dephaser changed. I hope that will do the trick./Hakan
