The rear cover of the handle mechanism has the cable fitted into it and just pops out if you insert a screwdriver into the housng about half way along the top edge. the cable has a cylindrical end piece that drops into two hooks on the inner end of the handle mechanism, make sure the handle is in the closed position and you clip the cable end of the rear cover back in first. When you operate the handle you should now be able to hear the door latch mechanism operating.

I thought it may be a bit late to help you but as I had just had to work out the same problem, I thought it may help others to put an answer up - trouble with the Modus is it's so hard to get information. I have even had to go to French and German forum sites. I had great fun trying to follow instructions to replace headlights with instructions translated from the German a couple of years back.

Glad you managed to work it out anyway, very little about the modus is obvious, as I'm sure you know.
