I've had my 10 plate grand scenic for just over a month now and was loving it. That was until friday when a phone call from the wife told me she had broken down while i was away at the british grand prix

Recovered and RAC man said he suspected the timing belt had snapped.

Spoke to Renault this morning as it's only 3 months out of warranty and only done 28,000 miles.

Booked in for diagnostics tomorrow and we will see where we go from there.

Renault tend to be good about this sort of thing, provided you have a service history. At that age and mileage, its well short of the manufacturer recomendations for a change, so we'll keep our fingers crossed for you!

Initial diagnostics back from Renault has confirmed the cam belt snapped and it need a new engine.

Currently waiting to hear back from them regarding what their position is with it being out of warranty.

The saving grace me be as i bought it from the auctions it was a ex mobility so i have been able to prove the service history.

Fingers crossed time

Running through the Goodwill Scale we used to use (in my head), I'd reckon on somewhere between 60 - 75% contribution from Renault.

Did they say that the belt snapped due to a material defect, or because of some other issue causing consequential damage (i.e. water pump)?

Has the dealer given you a ballpark figure for a new engine (incl labour & VAT)?

Best of luck,

Paul

Not had any ball park figures yet or any reason why it snapped.

Working both angles from the dealer and have a customer support manager at Renault dealing with my case.

Think i should hear something back in the next couple of days.

Cheers for the input folks

That's excellent news! Just goes to show that if you take the right approach with everybody you can get things sorted in a positive and timely way :)

I will be honest it felt like a massive load had been lifted off my mind. For the last few days all I've been constantly thinking about is how much it was going to cost me only a month after shelling out £7500 for the car

They should have the engine by the end of the week and all being well it should be ready by this time next week

Now to decide whether to keep it or move it on. Not asked the dealer yet but I assume I will get some kind of warranty on the new engine

Here's how it goes;

if a part is paid for 100% by warranty or by goodwill (when out of warranty), then it doesn't come with any warranty, but would be covered by what's remaining on the car at the time of fitting.

An example; vehicle suffers cambelt failure 2.5 years into it's inital 3 year warranty & new engine is fitted & paid for 100% by warranty - it is covered for the 6 months vehicular warranty remaining on the car. Beyond that point - no warranty.

However, that doesn't mean that you are left high & dry, as the engine will not be of a lower-quality, nor fitted with less care. And if you were to encounter a problem within a reasonable period, then goodwill would still be applied.

In all cases, your statutory rights aren't affected - but you may have to fight to get what you want, rather than have it handed to you.

It's entirely up to you what to decide, but that's the scenario hopefully clarified a bit.

HTH,

Paul

Got it back today.

They said the belt slipped and caused it to snap so i suspect it was the tensioner that failed.

Renault customer service has been fantastic. Turned the car round in 4 days. Need to speak to them tomorrow as they have given me the engine number of the new engine to update the V5 and its the same as the old one.

That's a great outcome. About the engine No. did Renault re-use your original block but rebuild it with a new head and all new internals etc hence the number remains the same?

They told me it was a whole new engine and with the fast turnaround as bigiian posted i don't think they would have had time to strip it down and replace bits and bobs.

I think it was just a mistake on the print out they gave me so i can update the DVLA. Will phone them monday.
