Hi all,
I have just had my 2003 scenic 1.9dci wrote off and I was wondering if the 1.5 dci engine is any good as swaying to get a 1.5 dci instead of another 1.9

Any thoughts

I am now on my 3rd scenic a 57 reg 1.6vvt the previous two being a 06 reg 1.5dci and a 53 reg 1.9dci I went all the way to spain in the 1.9 4 people fully loaded and averaged 54 mpg but the 1.5 on long runs would only get about 46mpg.I always found the smaller engine had to be worked a bit more (also found this in a laguna 1.5dci I had that only averaged about 40mpg}I would think you be better off with the 1.9dci with that little bit my power in reserve

The 1.5 Dci engines are prone to sticking piston rings.

Personally I would opt for the 1.9 Dci purely on the grounds that it won't be working as hard as the smaller engine even if the horsepower is similar.

The road tax on the smaller engine is likely to be less but in the overall cost of running a car it isn't the most expensive aspect of the cost of motoring. The car will depreciate more each year.

Hi,
I have a 2006 facelift 1.5 dci 106 Megane ST - I know its smaller and lighter than a Scenic but I find it fine both around town and autobahn. Averaged around 56 mpg on last years 2 week (1500 mile) trip to, from & around Hamburg 4 up with luggage. As for engine problems ? I haven't had any (shh......!) just passed 172 K on original clutch, battery and exhaust, but lost count of brake discs and headlight bulbs !
I suggest you test drive both a 1.5 and 1.9 and compare them, most dealers will have both on the forecourt.

Both I and my parents have Grand Scenic. Mine is a 1.5 and theirs are a 1.9. So I have driven both. It is not such a big difference as you might think, the 1.9 feels like it has a little bit more grunt though. The gearing is different, the 1.9 is geared higher than the 1.5 in my experience. Sixth gear has hardly ever been used in the 1.9, but I can use sixth gear in my 1.5.

Mind you, I do live in the Western parts of Norway, so roads here are mostly 50mph at max. Motorway driving in higher speeds could be different.

That said, I am happy with my 1.5. I have three kids and we often take longer trips so the car is fully loaded with luggage for five + roof box. It is fully capable even then to keep up with the traffic (the steepest hills require downshifting though). I have even towed a 14-1500 kgs trailer and that went ok (but the car was empty then though).

The only differance I can give as I had the 1.5dci and the basic none turbo 1.9 kangoo van
90% of the time it was loaded with heavyish tools inc a cement mixer again 90%was motorway driving the 1.9 was way better on the motorway the 1.5 was ok but lacked that extra power at times and the higher rpm at the same speed you keep looking for another gear

AFAIK, Shiny is how the 1.5 bores end up.
Bit off topic, we had a 1.4 Scenic then a 1.6, the 1.6 MUCH better. Especially when it came to economy.
