Hi,

I dont know if this is already a problem but this is my first post !

I have recently bought a 1999 Renault Clio 1.2 Grande and have taken it to a garage for its MOT. The garage called to tell me that the MOT had been aborted as when they were testing the exhaust emissions my car overheated.

The garage told me they didnt know what the problem was or how much it would cost to fix but that it would need to be done before the MOT (due at the end of the month). My car was fine to drive previously and fine to drive since and has never overheated, I do about two hours continous travelling in it once per week and it has never caused me a problem.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be ?

Thanks

Firstly the engine needs to be hot when being tested for exhaust emmissions and needs to be reved during the test. It could be the radiator fan isn't kicking in when it should.
There are a number of possibilities so you would need to try and recreate the conditions of the test to find out.
I take it you have checked the under bonnet levels for signs of loss?:)

Hi and a very warm welcome. Do you know if the cooling fan is kicking in at all. Under normal driving conditions the cooler air going through the rad whilst moving is normally enough to keep the engine cool. Whilst doing the MOT the car will be stationary so will not have air going through it. The fan will normally kick in when the temperature guage gets to around 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up to the hot setting. heck the cooling fan and get back to us. Kind regards Oily :)

Hi,

Just to let you both know I had a look at the car last night and the cooling fan doesn't work !!!

I have arranged to take it into the garage to get the fan fixed before it MOT, but he has no idea how much it will cost!

I have discovered another fault, the steering squeaks when I turn right hand corners ! Which I will have to get fixed ...

Poorly Car :(

Thank you anyway for your help !
