Hi there i am new to trhis forum ,on friday i fitted a new cambelt and water pump on my Laguna 1.9dci ,water pump leaking water all over tesco supermarket carpark / bearing totaly gone . Having followed the paint marks on the camshaft and high pressure pump and crank and tensioned the new cambelt as i tured the engine over with a rached and extension by hand the engine just locked up , took number one glowplug out and removed the camcover to see that cam was in correction / on back of camlobes ect . If I use the locking pin and insert this in the block and line the marks up on the cam/sprocket and high pressure pump tighten the cam tensioner up and remove the pin engine still seems to lock up. HOW can i know that thia engine is timed to number one TDC this is the one nearest flywheel according to hayes is this correct HELP

Timing pin can easily enter a balancing whole on crank shaft. On my 1.9Dci 790, the balancing whole is just before timing slot. There is nothing after balancing whole so if you pass it by a few degrees you will find the timing pin will go deep and hit block but no contact with crank shaft.
I assume you know that cam shaft static timing mark is on front plastic cover. You need to transfer that mark to steel back cover plate.
Easiest method is to fit timing belt that has paint marks.
Reconfirm by checking timing marks and turn a few times by hand to confirm there is no interference.
How do you intend to measure timing belt tension? Are you using my method which is published on this forum?

many thanks for the information i will have another go at this tomorrow , there is a couple of things the camsprocket as a white tipex mark on it already as the laguna had a cambelt on about 25k ago so can i be sure this is right ,i see the cut cut out in the camcover although it is a flimsy cloth type one can not see the point of this ,2. when the locking pin is inserted correctly does it lock the crank ie is there any movement at all if any when pin is in the correct location . 3. with regards to belt tension which method do you think is best as you refer to one on this forum
best regards DELTAONE

Don't trust anyother tippex marks than the ones you put on yourself, when you know it's timed properly. When the timing pin is in correctly there will be no movement in the crank either clock-wise or anti. use the timing window on the timing cover...the high pressure pump isn't essential because it is only a lift pump and isn't actually timed, so no need to pay any attention to it, other than your peace of mind perhaps.
