Hi all!

Firstly, what an amazing site - so helpful. My problem is a bit of a strange one!! I normally fill up my car every week to keep it topped up (rather than let it run to empty) this has worked fine for me in the past!

So.... I've been driving around for about 10 days or so and thought i'd top my diesel up (gauge showing 3/4 of a tank - i don't do that many miles). I pulled up at the pumps, as you do! Start fuelling, then it clicked off, so i started again, then it clicked off again... and so on! It was PAINFULLY slow filling up! I got to about 4/5 litres then I gave up and got ****ed off. A few hours later I tried a different petrol station - same problem! It's like pouring a can of coke into a glass incorrectly, waiting for the bubbles to settle before putting some more in? Never had this before? I know my car normally takes about 20 litres from 3/4 of a tank! Any ideas?

Many thanks in advance :)

Hi there Ryan and welcome.

Clearly, the 'issue' is with the car, rather than 2 filling stations having the same problem.

Most likely there is an air lock occuring in the tank, and that as fuel enters the neck of the tank, its the neck which is filling, then displacing some of the air in the tank, which is causing some blow-back, and cutting the flow into the tank.

It may be the case that a breather pipe is blocked, as this would allow air in the tank to be expelled as the fuel enters.

That is where I'd be looking first.

There will be a number of pipes in your fuel tank, for filling-up and fuel deliverey & return pipes leading to & from the engine. There will also be one (very close to the highest point of the tank, I'd imagine), which is just vented off - this is the breather pipe, otherwise known as an overflow.

Its purpose is 2-fold, the first is to prevent a vacuum occuring as the fuel level reduces, and the second reason is to prevent the tank from over-pressurising if it has been brimmed and then parked in hot conditions (fuel, like all liquids expands with heat).

A garage could check this for you at a nominal cost, I would imagine.

Best of luck Ryan.

I would use something like a thin cable tie to check the breather is clear.

Loop the cable tie tightly into itself though, so it won't fall into the tank, and remember to have the car secure if you are lifting it off the ground.

Hi Paul

Well I tried to look for this breather pipe, but couldn't find it? lol... maybe im looking in the wrong place? I looked under the wheel arch, could see the filler pipe going into the tank but nothing else? :-/ I've tried looking for a picture on here but couldn't find one! :(

The breather on the Clio runs up the side of the filler pipe then is joined to it about 6 inches from the filler, when you are filling it you can often see fuel coming back up it and joining the fuel you are putting in, mine and others I have filled do not like to be filled unless they are at least half empty and sometimes for no good reason can exhibit the behavior you describe, I find that not pushing the nozzle right in and controlling the flow so it's not on full helps, some fuel also foams more than others and this as a effect, I would run the tank down to at least half full then give it another go.

What is the capacity of the clio tank?

Mine is nominaly 60 l. the gauge is in 8 segments
Ive kept the car at never beyond 3 segments empty for awhile now.
Weirdly enough its not to do withchecking economy, its more to do with I want full weight in the tank for ride height appearance :) .

I have checked brim to brim economy etc.

It works something like this
I hit the garage and top it up, usually to the second time the garage pump cuts out when its full on(pump handle on full).
If I do that and use about 5 l as shown on the trip computer ( a bit over a gallon)then the first segment goes blank.
At about the 10l used according to the trip computer, the second segment goes blank.

On a strict visual indication I have used in and around 15 litres and the tank is 3/4 full but if I went to top it up I wouldnt get more than 10 l in on a garage pump.without trying trickle bursts to cut the froth.
Another 7-8l used and the gauge now shows 5/8 in the tank but ive only used about 18 l max .
another 8l gone and the tank shows 4/8 ie half full but ive only used 25 of 60l.

What I have done is put 4.54 l in a 1 gallon jerry can( the plastic type) then driven home after topping the tank with a pump and seeing how much more would go in.
I got the full 1 gallon in without any overflow and there were no diesel streaks or dropping afterward..
.
Lets say I used half a litre driving home at most.
I then got another 4 L into the tank without any probs that I could see.

Dont know if thats any use to you or not. Maybe current derv foams like a ..lot ;0
