Megane III Radio Won't Turn Off

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me as the local Renault Dealer can't look at my car for another 5 days.

The problem is with my 2011 Megane Dynamique TomTom Sport Tourer 1.5dCi.

As I was driving this morning I noticed I had no control of the radio, either using the stalk controls or the head unit controls. I wasn't able to even turn it off.

When I stopped I thought turning off the engine and opening the door would turn off the radio and allow me to start up again with everything working. Unfortunately not. The radio remains on even after switching off the engine, leaving the vehicle and locking it. When I return to it several minutes later the radio is still on. I don't know that much about cars but I reckon this will result in me having a flat battery fairly soon!

The radio/satnav display is showing the radio and satnav as being off (just the big clock displaying in the middle) yet the radio is still on and audible. Pressing the radio on/off knob has no effect (satnav remains off).

I thought perhaps removing the fuse would be a temporary solution, but on accessing the fusebox in the glove compartment I found the fuse that the manual says is for the radio is rendered inaccessible by the plastic fascia that obscures the top right of the fuse panel.

Has anyone any ideas on what the problem is, how to resolve it, or temporary fixes please? Is it straightforward to disconnect the radio and satnav from the battery altogether as a temporary measure (I'm sure this will result in me having to find the radio code again but I'll have to deal with that later).

Thanks.
Rob

Thanks. I took it to a non-Renault mechanic who disconnected the battery and also ran diagnostics on it. Unfortunately disconnecting didn't resolve the issue, and the diagnostics weren't reporting any errors.

Anyone want to buy a Megane 1.5dci sport tourer with dodgy radio and flat battery? :)

Haha, it's Radio 2 so it could be worse I suppose. Luckily the volume isn't too high.

Strangely though, I went to the car this morning expecting the battery to be flat having had the radio on all night, but it was still fine. The radio was still on, but the car started without any problems. It must have been at least 15 hours just sat on the drive paying the radio to itself.

Anyway, as soon as I started the car this morning the radio turned itself off!

I don't think I'll risk turning it on again just yet. I'll leave it booked into Renault garage on Wednesday and see what they have to say.

Well, Renault ran their diagnostics on my car this morning and informed me that the radio is knackered, the only solution is to replace it. This will cost over £400 through the official Renault channels!

I've asked them to leave it disconnected for now and I will try to find a cheaper aftermarket radio/satnav solution.

If anyone has any recommendations I'd be glad to hear them!

Cheers.

The ball is now firmly in your court and you have a positive course of action pen to you rather than simply moaning about the problems online.
I don't think people are using the forum to simply moan about the problem online rather than take another course of action. Simply moaning online was certainly not my intention.

If problem details are posted online and someone replies with a solution to that problem then that would seem pretty positive to me (and can often be quicker and cheaper than getting the problem resolved through official channels such as Renault themselves).

In the case of this particular thread, despite people's helpful suggestions, the problem wasn't able to be resolved by me. Therefore, I have booked my car into an official Renault dealer to have the resolve the issue for me - another positive course of action.

Calling Renault Customer Service and complaining about my out of warranty, non-safety related problem is an additional, but not alternative course of action. Forum responses and booking the car in to be fixed are much more likely to result in getting things back to normal quickly than waiting for a critical mass of complaints to hit the Customer Complaints team.

Admittedly, I've not had much experience of Renault Customer services so if they do have a history of freely resolving out of warranty, non-safety issues within a month or two then I'm the fool for paying their service centre £450+ to repair the problem for me. I would also hope that booking the car into an official service centre for repairs would also go some way to giving Renault feedback on knowledge of the issue.
