Hi

I have recently bought a clio 2002 reg 75000 miles, the first few days it was shaking violently and cutting out in the mornings! I took it back to where i bought it from and they said its fixed it needed the throttle heads cleaning/new coil pack, I started it up today seems to be running ok when up to 1500 revs or more, the problem now is when its idle it still shakes a little not as bad as before but if it wants to cut out but doesn't, its sort of intermittent, my question is will this go ok or should i bring it back again?

Thanks in advance

Hi there Michael, and welcome.

Do any warning lights/messages appear on the dash when this happens?

Normally I would urge you to go back to the garage (as you have paid for a repair), but since you say the situation has improved (and the erratic behaviour is now intermittent), I fear they may say it's a separate issue and ask you to open your wallet again.

Only you know if you can stand to fund another repair so soon.

It might be worth getting an auto-electrician to check the car for fault codes, and something you can do yourself (for free), is to check the airbox and associated pipework for any gaps/cracks that would allow additional unmetered air into the engine, weakening the mixture to the point where it's in danger of cutting out.

I would also suggest using the search facility on the forum, as no doubt someone has encountered a similar problem before (and resolved it).

HTH,

Hi

Its under 30day warranty so it didn't cost me anything! ive had the car since Saturday, there is no lights on the dash and it runs like a dream when driving its only when its idle and the accelerator isn't being pressed, it sort of judders a little but then goes ok say every 15- 20 seconds but nowhere neer as bad as before! is it something serious do you think?

Cheers

Mike, it's really hard to determine if it's something that will never develop into something catastrophic and you can live with/drive around, or or if it's an early warning of something more ominous.

I wouldn't examine it myself, if I have a warranty as a safety net.

Get them to check it out, and let us know what the problem was & how you are treated.

It's encouraging that it doesn't detract from the driving experience (i.e. car isn't going into 'limp home' mode or similar), but it's a coin-toss if it stays that way, tbh.
