Hello Renaultistas.

Just thought I would do a quick write up on my experiences today with the alternator change on a Renault Clio 2003 1.5 DCI. The reason I'm doing it is due to the fact I couldn't find anything regarding it on the internet myself so hopefully if even one person find it useful then it will have helped.

Step by step.

1) Get a trolley jack under the sump, pack it out with either a block of wood or some thick cloth just so it doesn't cut in and then jack it up to take the weight of the engine.

2) Remove the driver side engine mount completely and jack the engine up a couple of inches.

3) Get a spanner on the nut near the tensioner, I used an adjustable spanner so I can't give a size. The tensioner is the smooth wheel with the belt running flat side underneath it, it is on a pivot arm and you should be turning it towards the bumper to relieve tension and slip the belt off. I personally found the spring to be quite stiff so you will have to give it some.

4) Remove the top and lower bolt on the alternator and give it a tap and a nudge to get it free.

5) Remove the oil filter, I found it impossible to get the alternator out with that there, you have to shimmy the alternator over to the passenger side to get the bugger out. This is where the engine mount being taken off comes in handy, as you can push and waggle the engine.

6) Put your new alternator unit in and get it bolted up so that the pushes pull in flush and crank it tight. I found it goes in quite easily compared to taking it out!

7) Get your spanner back on the tensioner and pull it back again to get your belt on. I found this to be a right pain in the **** due to it being a new belt but I got there in the end.

8) Lower your engine a touch to get the mount back on and get the bolts in.

And that's it, hopefully someone who is a bit unsure might find this useful as I thought it looked quite daunting at first.

Cheers,

First post but I thought I had to join if just to thank Sandman for such a brilliant write up.

Followed verbatim and it worked a treat.

This was after downloading another article designed for a 1.2 and does not work with a 1.5....

Only issues, none of which to do with the post. It took me/us 6 hours to get off a seized oil filter, 6 hours to get the cross threaded nuts on the alternator sorted, all in all spread over 3 days and with more cuts and bruises than Mike Tyson after a good bout.

Job done, and car back on road again.....

Oil filter is on an extension from the cooler if you remove the centre nut you can lift the filter and extension off giving more space handy if filter is stubborn
Otherwise good post
Cor Mr E, wish I had known that before I did it. Its like performing a waltz in a portable toilet, more space in a matchbox......

And whats this with having to remove the whole front of the car to change a light bulb, someone in France having a laugh ?

Cheers

Are we describing a Clio with air con? I changed the alternator on my Clio couple of years back without all that fuss. Removed inner wheel arch to gain access to auxiliary belt but did not remove engine mount.
I do remember that alternator bolts do not come out completely until it has been moved slightly out of position.
