CREAKS / SQUEEKS / SQUEAKS from top of doors!!!

Anyone else had problems with the top (outer) door seals creaking against the bodywork. It's driving me mad. the car has only covered 3000 miles and has more noises , creaks and squeeks than my 100,000 mile Audi A6 had!

Would be particularly interested if anyone else has this problem AND has either a dealer or DIY fix. Silicon spray made the problem go away for a few days, but now it's back as bad as ever!

This only seems to happen when the windows are FULLY closed (crank them down even a fraction of a mm and the noise goes away)

My local Renault dealer has just told me that Renault UK do NOT cover noises like this under warranty. Unbelievable!!

A potential solution?

I posted the same question on the Parkers forum, and got this reply:

"Sent the car to the Renault service centre this morning. The service officer informed me that this is a known problem for "some" Scenic IIs. They have tried changing and lubricating the door seals but this does not solve the problem. Tightening the door hinges do not work either.

He informed me that the only known solution is to stick a “rubber strip” along the section where the door's rubber seal rubs against car’s body. The “rubber strip” has been ordered and they are now awaiting delivery. No ETA given but I will continue to bug them……"

Are there any Renault Techs on this forum who could confirm/deny that this is a known fix for the issue? Sounds a bit naff, but if it stops the creaks and a dealer can fit it then that is good enough for me!

Cheers,

Noisy door seals - resolved

I Came up with this fix, after hearing that Renault in Singapore are proposing to retrofit a "rubber strip" to solve the problem if it is reported:

What I did:

1) Closed all four doors
2) Got whiteboard marker pen and traced line on painted bodywork across top of each door (using the edge of the rubber door seal as a "ruler")
3) Got a piece of velcro (loop, soft side) for each door and stuck it to the inside of the door frame (on the car body itself NOT the door) just inside the line I had drawn

This results in NO MORE NOISE, and the velcro is not visible from outside the car with the doors closed. It does not affect the seal or weathertightness of the car in any way.

Someone I passed the fix on to in Singapore has put some pics up at: http://www.renaultcarclub.com/forum...viewtopic.php?t=24487&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=scenic+noise&start=195

I bought a 25m role of the "loop" side of velcro from eBay for £15 (which is very cheap for that amount). Should have just enough there to deal with a few years ownership of a Renault and all the squeeks and creaks it's likely to develop :)

Cheers,

Nick

There is also a similar problem with a load of Picassos. Citroen have tried numerous fixes, even replacing the seals.

At the suggestion of their head mechanic I rubbed "vaseline" on the seals and the creaking disappeared. Not a permanant solution but lasted about 4 or 5 mths before having to re-apply it.

Also it may be due to the doors not closing "tight" enough against the seals. The "door jam" mounted on the pillar or wheel arch may be able to be moved in slightly, just loosen screws and push in a bit further and re-tighten them. This may allow the doors to close tight enough to stop the rattles.

Tried all forms of lubrication I could think of:

Autoglym vinyl and rubber care
Halfords silicone spray
Vaseline
Talc

Still squeek, creak, groan all the time....and the silicone just kept "bleeding" out of the seals and running all over the bodywork.

Tried adjusting the door jams - didn't seem to have any movement possible. I think the root cause is that either the chassis or doors flex, and then the rubber seals make noise as they contact on the door surround. They look like they should sit "flat" against the surround, but where I have fitted the velcro I can see two narrow 'lines' where contact from the seals has depressed the tape. Maybe the door seal design sucks, or maybe the car is just too wobbly - who knows!

The velcro fix seems to have worked though!

Hi guys,

just a thought, i had a customer with a similar complaint of creaking from the door seals, could hardly hear it from outside but when sat in the car and someone gently pushes on the door...oh my god what a racket, tried silicon spray on the seals to start with (as you do) and the noise went away, for about a day, luckily this guy very understanding and patient went away to try a few things himself, to no avail. booked in and left for a few hours eventually i took off the black plastic trim on the B pillar between the front and back doors, noise gone, refitted it and squeak back, after trying a few things i came down to some Gaffer tape over the plastic clip holes and down the trim where it would contact the door seals but on the inside where it sits against the pillar.
This shut the noise up a treat, so much so that the customer, who watched the repair and was over the moon, could now hear the passenger side noisey too, no probs, same fix sorted that out too, that was about a month ago now and this guy has been back a couple of times for other reasons, i.e. his daughter has bought a clio, and he is still driving in silence and well happy with the repair.

Now im not saying that this will cure your noises but worth a try eh?

Good luck

Gogslad.

P.s. smart thinking with the velcro!!

In some markets Renault fitted a thin tape ( similar to sellotope ) where the rubbers and paintwork came into contact, I get the odd Squeak from my 07 Scenic II but did not have any probs with my 05 Scenic II.

I use a propriety trim cleaner/lubricant on all seals and it seems to have resolved the problem.

Mostly noticeable if the car has been standing for a while or on sunny days ( Should not be a prob this year :) ) The squeak usually disappears within the first few miles, Some Megane II owners have reported similar problems ..
