My bonnet's in an awful state with the clear coat peeling and coming off in big chunks.

I've sprayed some aerosol clear coat over the affected areas as a temporary fix.

My options seem to be a full bonnet respray done at a body shop.

Spray the bonnet myself.

Plasti-dip.

Vinyl wrap.

What would be the best option? Anyone got any other options or advice?

If it was me I'd have the bonnet removed on a nice sunny day, take it in the garage, sand it down nicely and re-spray it

The bonnet is quite an easy one to get looking good as spraying it is fairly easy (It's flat, and when removed, nothing to over-spray onto)

see if one of your local valet / body tidy up companies offers a flat polish service. This will buff back the clear coat and prepare the surface for another coat of clear coat or a good polish coat. At worse a spray coat of paint followed by another flat back and clear coat. A vinyl wrap will cover it but will not always remove the cause and if not done correctly may increase corrosion beneath that cannot be seen until too late.

Why not take a trip to your local scrapyard, see if they've got a better one in the same colour?
Or buy it anyway, respray, then change, so you ain't off the road.

If this is a car you've only owned a relatively short time, and this is quite a recent phenomenon, I'd be very curious to ascertain the root cause of the peeling.

You really want to know if it's down to some external factor; cack-handed application of lacquer (poor-quality lacquer, even), or it is a reaction or contamination between the basecoat and the lacquer.

If it's the former, then yes, careful removal of the clearcoat, a light prep and re-lacquering will be fine (and fairly cheap).

But if it's the latter, the bonnet should really be taken back to the primer/bare metal stage to ensure the integrity of the remaining steps.

As suggested, price replacement bonnets, but don't specify a colour, otherwise you'll find (amazingly) that the bonnet that matches your car, is twice the price.

it really depends on how good you want it to look?

or if you want to look like carbon fibre? do a wrap?

if the rest of the car s mint, then it wants to be resprayed really ?

Got to admit, that I'd be electing for the wrap (special-effect or a straight colour).

That looks to me like the lacquer has been compromised due to bird crap and the remainder of the paintwork looks beyond help.

Provided there is no rust (or you deal properly with it beforehand), get it wrapped.

On a car that size, you should be circa £200, and it's much less time off the road than a respray.

Appreciate all the advice guys The car cost about £700 so I've decided against getting it painted at a bodyshop.

I'll most likely stick some vinyl over it after I get the peeling bits of lacquer fixed up. Couldn't look any worse.......I hope
