Hi All,

The good lady has a 1.6 vvt Scenic Auto, just recently it has developed a concerning trend.

On initial startup the car will run for 5-10 seconds and cut out, does the same on the 2nd and 3rd startups (Whether hot or cold) and then runs fine after that.

No other symptoms I have noticed other than she felt it has been down on power when pulling away a couple of times.

No rattles etc on startup either?

Anybody have thoughts/experience of this?

Thanks

Hello,

when you start your scenic on first start up does it start lazy. Even if you don't get the rattle like noise on start up, the lazy starting and cutting out on first start up are symptoms that the camshaft dephaser pulley is on its way out. Search for more info. Other then that it could be a faulty camshaft sensor.

Thanks Harry,

it starts first push of the button fairly quickly too, however on two occasions it has just turned and turned without catching.

After searching for some time on here it was either the TDC or Camshaft Sensor I was thinking of, I tried to plug it into my VCDS diagnostic software but it wouldnt recognise it, it looks like I will either have to pick up a code reader or pop it into renault to see if any codes are stored.

Apologies for the multi replies of mine through this thread, I'm just putting info in as I come across it hopefully it'll help someone else in the future.

P0010 is the equivalent to Renault code DF080 which is the Camshaft Dephaser Solenoid.

I have found a few folks on other forums with the same problem and TDC Sensor has fixed some but not others.

A description of the conditions that must be met in order for the Dephaser Solenoid to be operational I found elsewhere is as follows:

The camshaft dephaser control solenoid valve is controlled
if the following conditions are met:
- no speed sensor fault,
- no camshaft position sensor fault,
- no injection system faults,
- after the engine has started,
- outside idling speed and no load,
- threshold of mapping according to load and engine
speed reached,
It's pointing more and more at the TDC, if the dephaser solenoid is cheap enough I may just change that at the same time, I cant seem to find a price for it on here :(

I have the exact same model and I had the noise on starting, so when I got my last service before my warranty ran out, but they said they could not find anything wrong. Now, that the warranty has ran out, it is now doing the 'cutting out thing' when starting, so I booked it in and they said it looks like the camshaft etc.. just as the thread says has problems. It was Arnold Clark, so I had to then pay for the diagnostic on it, decided to remove it and have it booked into a garage I know is good and trustworthy. I only saw this thread today once I got home, so I'm going to complain to them as soon as possible. Does anyone know the possible cost for this, as I'm without the car now until it is fixed.

Well, I got a TDC Sensor from the local motor factors, set to fitting it yestarday, what a PITA that was, had to take the full thermostat housing off and drain the engine coolant.

Popped the sensor out and got the new one, typical, it was the wrong one! The one the motor factors gave me had no dowels on it, I think it may have just been a mix up with the Manual/Automatic version, however after reading most of the posts on here its usually said that cleaning it up does the trick, so I set to with a fine emery and some IPA, put it all back together and all the symptoms persisted

So where to now? I will get the brand new sensor tomorrow and fit that, but I hold little hope that it will fix the issue. Having a look through the cars history it had a Camshaft sensor fitted in January this year, that may be my next point of call.

I have uploaded a video of it, sounds not great but you can see by the rev counter how it just starts up and dies off.

No EML at all

Thanks Steven, I'll keep that in mind!

Strange thing there, curious about the Camshaft Sensor, I went out and disconnected the Camshaft sensor, turned the car over and it started and idled no problem, no cutting out!

It was overfuelling like hell, lots of petrol smell and was a bit hesitant to rev cleanly, does this sound like its worth popping a new one in?

Well, Seems I have a self healing Renault! :D

the stalling stopped all of a sudden? very strange!, however I did have the car booked in at my local dealers today for a diag after I heard the dreaded rattle on startup, only happened once mind, but nonetheless concerning with a slight whirring sound on driving!

Renault diagnosed as expected, faulty dephaser pulley :(

I have been in touch with RCS so the dealers are reporting direct to them, hoping to get a call soon with some sort of positive outcome.
