Grand Espace IV locking problems

Right I'll try and explain this the best I possibly can.

I brought a 2nd hand Espace 2011 and when we first brought it, the drivers door didn't always lock, the keys were battered and very worn.

As time went on and we replaced both keys through Renault. And the first thing i noticed is that the if I press the unlock button, it will lock most of the doors, but unlock the boot.

So the boot works correctly with the key. And I can ocaisonally get the drivers doors to lock if i press the lock and then the unlock button. If i walk away without locking it it beeps and flashes at me. Can any one help with this as its starting to drive me potty...

Many THanks in advance

Suzy

Hi Suzy

first of all welcome to the forums

let me get this straight with a couple of questions:-

The keys are original Renault keys?
Pressing "LOCK" on the fob, locks the boot but unlocks everything else?
Pressing "UNLOCK" on the fob, unlocks the boot but locks everything else?

actually thats what it is supposed to do, it is for emergency opening only, but thought it was worth a test to see if the computer that handles locking and unlocking was having a hissy fit

is this a problem that has sneaked up on you or did it happen overnight that both keys failed to do what they should do? in fact did they ever do the correct thing?

if both keys exhibit the same fault on the car then I have to believe that the keys are fine and the car is at fault.

It's had the same problem since I purchased the car. Hence why I brought new Keys. However it didn't seem to solve the issue.

I believe it is something to do with the car, i'm just not sure what. Is there anyway I could check to see if its the original ECU that was built with the car ? To see if someone has changed it

I dont believe there is any way to check whether the ECU you have fitted was fitted at the factory, they all carry the same part number they are just programmed differently for each car. Generally because of immobiliser problems a lot more than the ECU would need ot be changed, I wonder if we could "shock" it into coming back to normality, do you have the code to reinstate the stereo if you disconnect/change the battery? it will be a 4 digit code and normally written in the user manual or on a card in the user manual folder. If you have and only if you have - without locking the car, remove the negative terminal from the battery and leave it for about an hour, for all the itinerant electrons to die away, then go into the car and turn on the lights ( purely to mitigate the risk of electric spikes to ECU's etc) then reconnect the negative terminal again, go and turn off the lights now, start the car to make sure everything is OK, put in the radio code if it asks for it, then turn off the car and try lock it, see if the reboot of the ECU's has removed the glitch.

I need to change the battery anyway, as its slowly giving up. I will give that a go and let you know how it goes fingers crossed it'll work. Thankyou for your help. As it's doing my head in.

Twice I've been locked out the car whilst its running.. luckily my son was able to open window on the 1st time and on the second my old man has to climb through the boot lol

if you are buying and fitting the battery yourself, wait the hours or so before fitting the new one, if you are taking it to a battery fitter, can you ask them to wait at least 30 minutes before fitting the new after taking off the old one and explain why if needed.

Go to the boot, lift the tailgate, you will see a rubber tube, possibly twop by the hinge ,, One will feel thinner than the other if two fitted, this will be for washer hose, the other will have the loom in it..
Check to see if any signs of repair on the wiring loom, by pulling the rubber tube down, , or up, or both..
If you see two wires have been repaired, change them around

Its your boot lock wiring at fault, the wires are reversed, either in these tubes, or on the lock,.
No signs of repair there, then remove the tail gate card and check the boot lock wiring

HI welcome back

did you try @ours2012 ideas of what to look for and where

No signs of repair there, then remove the tail gate card and check the boot lock wiring

and if all looks ok

Personally would disconnect the tailgate lock, and see what happens.

... would go at the tailgate first
:wink2:

Yes but its the signal, the tailgate does not know what it does, as in, it makes no difference to the tailgate, , it gets a signal, and this unlocks the tailgate,..
( back to switched earth system. If power is reversed here, then the system thinks he has authorised unlock

The motor just turns one way, its not reversed .. It doesn't lock the tail gate,, thats the difference, what happens the power is switched off, so the motor cannot turn, unlock, as in Pressing the tailgate switch, THIS completes the circuit, but when locked, the tailgate has no circuit

Personally would disconnect the tailgate lock, and see what happens.

With him also saying he bought the car with this fault.... would go at the tailgate first

Suzy is female :grin2::grin2:

So Suzy, disconnect the electrical connector to the tailgate lock, and try the key fob to see if all the other doors lock and unlock as they should, if they do then there is a probem with the wiring to the tailgate lock as describe by the Guru above :wink2:
